Morphologically, the lowest point of Tehran province is located in Varamin city with a height of 749 meters above sea level, and the highest point of the province is located in Tochal Heights with 4375 meters above sea level in Shemiranat city. The mega city of Tehran is also built on the alluvial fans at the foot hill of Alborz mountain, which are located on volcanic-sedimentary rocks of the third geological period (Cenozoic) that during the fourth geological period, it was affected by tectonic activities (Habibi and Horkad, 2014; Ali Beigi et al., 2015). High rates of erosion and sedimentation and urban development cause the destruction or burial of fault structures and their identification sign. Determining the boundary of geological structures is one of the most important and practical issues that has always been discussed in the various sub-branches of the earth sciences, including geophysics (Neawsuparp et al., 2005). Past tectonic earthquake studies have shown that the boundaries of geological structures are mostly identified by faults. In other words, the presence of faults is one of the indicators of active tectonic areas. Therefore, the study of faults to investigate seismicity in connection with the plans for the development of civil activities of cities, industrial towns and the scope of strategic facilities, the investigation of mineral potentials (minerals related to fractures and fault areas) and the detailed understanding of tectonic trends is very important. Here this method is used to calculate the location of seismic events that also presents the seismic nature of the fault processes and its geometry and depth structure in an area.<br />In addition to reviewing aerial photographs and field survey, studying satellite images is one of the practical methods for identifying the trend of obvious faults and preparing maps of the fault system of different regions. In recent years, preparing airborne geophysical maps for hidden fault structures has become common. On the other hand, one of the most common methods for detecting hidden structures, including faults, is aerial magnetic studies, the interpretation and modeling of which has helped researchers in identifying subsurface faults or possible buried faults.<br />It is worth mentioning that in some cases the boundary of the structures may not be associated with a fault. Also, there is a possibility that a fault structure does not have a noticeable magnetic signal. Therefore, the results of satellite images or aerial magnetometry do not necessarily lead to the identification of all hidden faults. In this research, it has been tried to process the aerial magnetometer data of Tehran province by different methods (e.g. reduction to the pole, directional derivatives, upward continuation, analytical signal, and horizontal gradient). Then put it on the fault map of the area and comparing the results, the degree of concordance of the trends of the faults in the region with the magnetic anomalies, magnetic bedrock type faults are identified. In the final stage, by placing a new layer of the seismicity map of the region, those active bedrock faults can be identified.<br />The general results obtained in this research confirm that some of the active faults in the Tehran region are of the basement type, that the ability of these faults to cause large earthquakes is not far from expected, and this result is consistent with other recent seismological studies conducted by Soltani-Moghadam (2016), Ahmadzadeh et al. (2019) and Azqandi et al. (2023) and there is in very good agreement with their finalings.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) method estimates the age of the last exposure time of sediments. OSL has been developed as a dating tool for sediments and nowadays it is used as a suitable method to determine the age of Quaternary sediments. This age determination is done using quartz grains of sedimentary samples. The two basic factors in estimating the OSL age of sediments are the dose equivalent to the natural dose (De) and the annual dose (Da). In order to estimate the De, the luminescence signal obtained from light stimulation of quartz grains is used. For most sedimentary quartz, during exposure to the stimulating light (visible) the OSL signal is seen to decay to a low level as a function of illumination time, (normally termed the OSL decay curve). In general, the decay is usually non-exponential, typically exhibiting a long "tail" to the decay at long illumination time. This initial part of the signal has a maximum value, and is known as the fast component and is used to estimate the De. The next parts of the signal slowly decrease and are not suitable for dating and their effect is removed. Therefore, the intensity and shape of the luminescence signal decay curve have a fundamental effect on the accuracy of measuring the equivalent dose and, as a result, the accuracy of the resulting age.<br />The weakness of the sensitivity of quartz sediment grains in Iran to produce the OSL signal and also the bad behavior of the resulting luminescence signal to produce the signal growth curve (in terms of dose) has been repeatedly seen by the second author and has sometimes been published (Fattahi 2015, Appendix; Fattahi et al., 2019 Figure 3). As, this weakness can cause the inability of the luminescence method to determine the reliable age of young samples, investigating and solving this problem of quartz OSL characteristic in Iran is of great importance. However, in many studies, feldspar signal has been used due to the lack of quartz or weak sensitivity or bad behavior of quartz signal (Fattahi et al., 2007).<br />In order to solve this problem, comprehensive research was conducted and this article presents part of its results. In this study, following extracting quartz grains from 3 kinds of sedimentary quartz their luminescence characteristics were investigated. The results of designed experiments show that by increasing the intensity of the stimulating source (blue-470 nm) while sample is hold at 125°C, the intensity and the decay rate of the OSL decay curves increase. It also shows that by increasing the laboratory dose a more accurate growth curve (luminescence vs dose) can be created and the specified laboratory dose can be restored. These finding confirm the finding of previous workers on the quartz OSL characteristic from other part of the world and will provide the potential for dating young samples.

The measured potential field data can be considered as the result of the superposition of the anomalies from sources with various depths. Regional anomalies due to the origin of deep structures and residual anomalies due to the origin of shallow structures form the long and short parts of the total measured field wavelength, respectively. Therefore, one of the most important steps in the potential field data processing is the regional-residual anomalies separation which is used as the basis for inversion and interpretation. The process of separating regional and residual anomalies in potential field data is usually performed in the measured or frequency domain. Methods such as moving averaging, polynomial fitting, and minimum curvature are some of the well-known methods in the potential field separation in the measuring domain. Methods that perform the separation process in the frequency domain have superior performance compared to other methods, making them more common and widely used. Methods such as simple wavenumber filtering, matched filters, preferential filters, and Wiener filters are some of the common methods in the frequency domain to separate regional and residual anomalies. Various researches have shown that the rank of trajectory matrix obtained from measured potential field data depends on the depth of the anomaly source, and the rank of trajectory matrix of the deep sources are lower than that of the shallow sources. In this paper, the spectral analysis of singular values (SSA) was used to reduce the rank of the trajectory matrix obtained from gravity data in order to separate the regional and residual anomalies. Based on the theory of the SSA method, the following method was proposed to separate regional and regional anomalies in 2D gravity data. At the first step, the trajectory matrix is calculated from the Henkel matrices obtained from the measured data. Then, the obtained trajectory matrix is decomposed to eigen triples by employing the SVD and the eigenimages of it are calculated. The optimal value of rank is obtained from the elbow point of the cumulative contribution chart for eigenimages and the trajectory matrix related to regional anomaly is constructed using optimal rank. Finally, the separated regional anomaly is obtained by averaging along anti-diagonals element of the reconstructed trajectory matrix. The efficiency of the proposed method is investigated on both synthetic and real field data examples. Investigating the relationship between the depth of origin of the anomaly and the rank of the trajectory matrix calculated from the measured data showed that there is an inverse relationship between them. The obtained results of synthetic and real data showed that the technique of reducing the rank of the trajectory matrix using SSA can be used as a method of separating anomalies with different depths of origin in potential field data. Also, comparing the results of the proposed method with the results of polynomial fitting and matched filtering methods showed that the proposed method has a better performance in the separation of residual and regional anomalies and can produce better results in environments with high geological complexity.

The study area is located in the NE of Iran, in the NW of “Sabzevar” city, in the west of Sabzevar ophiolite (Upper Cretaceous). Harzburgite, dunite, lherzolite and wehrlite (mostly serpentinized) are the main ultramafic rocks of Sabzevar ophiolite. This area is well-known for the presence of chromite mines. Due to tectonic forces, chromite layers are displaced from their original place by faults in many locations. One of the most important steps in mining exploration of such area is the identification of geological structures. In peridotitic rocks, identification of faults, in the natural topographic surfaces, is usually difficult. Identification of faults can help reveal the correct location of the hidden deposits which in turn, can reduce the costs of mining operations and increase productivity. Azimuthal resistivity sounding (ARS) and square array resistivity methods (SAR) are geoelectrical methods that are widely used to identify the direction of discontinuities in fractured, faulted, and jointed rocks. In this research, one SAR sounding is used in a part of the mining area to identify the local geological structure. Two advantages of the square array, compared to the Schlumberger, is the need for a smaller area and the less dependence of the resistivity to changes in direction. The deployment of the square array requires an area of about 65% of the Schlumberger or Wenner arrays. The bedrock of the location is made of serpentinized peridotites. About 80% of the original peridotitic (or ultramafic) rocks are altered to serpentinites. Using a geoelectric resistivity device, data collection was performed on serpentinites with no overburden. This method was carried out to check the existence of a suspected fault in one of the mines. The apparent resistivities measured by the square array method showed significant changes in different geographical directions. Apparent resistivities were calculated by increasing the length of the side of the square array, in 4 steps, which increases the depth of exploration to the greater depths. Due to the lack of large surfaces in the study area, the deployment of the square array was implemented with spatial limitation (maximum 13.8m). Obviously, by increasing the length of the side of the square array, more accurate information can be obtained from the subsurface conditions. The length of the square sides was set to be 3.5, 4.9, 6.9, 9.8 and 13.8m. With increasing the length of the square side, the apparent resistivity shows a decreasing trend from 270 to 180 to 110 to 65 and to 70 Ω.m. Anisotropy ellipses were drawn for each depth. The ellipses of resistivity are formed distinctly except for the lowest depth which is in the form of a star. According to the anisotropy ellipses, 4 groups of joint sets exist which are in the direction of 30°,67°,120° and 150°. To compare the results of the square array resistivity with another method, the joint sets were measured at the outcrop, using a geological compass. The results are drawn in the form of a rose diagram. The joint sets inferred from the apparent resistivity diagrams are similar to the rose diagram with regard to the number of joint sets and show fairly a good correlation in terms of the direction of the joint sets. The maximum coefficient of anisotropy is estimated to be 2.0. The interpretation of the square array data shows that the existence of a fault, in the studied local area, does not seem to be likely and the joint sets are the main structural feature in this location. Hence it is appropriate to carry out the square array survey in auxiliary points, along with additional studies, including collecting data at the outcrops or, if possible, using other geophysical methods to reach more certain results.

Seismic data jitter sampling is one of the new seismic data acquisition methods developed recently to reduce seismic data acquisition costs. In this method, the number of seismic sources and receivers is less than the number determined by the Nyquist-Shannon Theorem. The Nyquist-Shannon theorem states that the sampling rate of a digital signal must be more than twice the bandwidth of the signal to avoid aliasing. To circumvent aliasing, the jitter sampling method uses compressed sensing technique. This technique is based on the principle that the sparsity of a signal can be used to recover it from fewer samples than required by the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem in two conditions. First, the signal needs to be sparse in some domains, like the frequency domain. Second, the signal must be randomly sampled in the main domain, like the time or space domain. In this type of data sampling method, the randomness of sampling appears as a white noise in the transform domain. Therefore, it can be said that the compressed sensing method plays the role of a denoising technique in the transformation domain. In conventional compressed sensing methods, it is assumed that the data is undersampled on a regular grid. Fourier transform, Curvelet transform, and wavelet transform are some of the transforms that are used in these types of compressed sensing methods. On the other hand, sometimes in real seismic data acquisition, the shots and receivers cannot have a regular geometry due to the natural and civil obstacles. Therefore, sampling on a regular grid is not always possible in seismic data acquisition. This means that using the conventional compressed sensing method for seismic data regularization doesn’t seem to be an appropriate choice. To address this issue, some geophysicists have proposed to use discrete Fourier transform as the data transformation technique in compressed sensing. Discrete Fourier transform does not require sampling on a uniquespace grid. However, this transform is slow and needs a huge number of computations. In this paper, we used the non-uniquespace fast Fourier transform instead of the discrete Fourier transform. The method doesn’t need a sampling scheme on a regular grid and is much faster than discrete Fourier transform. This method is based on the conventional fast Fourier transform and an interpolation technique. The method can be applied on multidimensional pre-stack seismic data. Therefore, it can consider correlation between traces in different dimensions while interpolating the lost traces. On the other hand, a problem with fully random sampling is that there is no control over the locations of the samples on a signal. This means that, if a signal is sampled randomly, some parts of the signal may be oversampled while the other parts may not be sampled with enough points. This phenomenon may have a bad impact on the regularized result if the signal changes erratically. To avoid this situation, in this paper, a sampling protocol will be introduced to improve the control over random sampling. In this protocol, the samples are picked randomly in small windows over the length of the signal. In this sampling technique, the size of the windows and the number of random samples can be controlled easily. Moreover, the sampling scheme doesn’t need to be on a regular grid and the samples can be chosen anywhere along the signal. A set of 2D and 3D synthetic and 2D real seismic data were used to examine the performance of the proposed method. The results show that the method can regularize irregular seismic data properly.

Surface soil moisture is an important variable in the climate system, controlling the exchange of water, energy and carbon, between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere. Also, the quantification of surface soil moisture is necessary for the simulation of climate change, the prediction of floods and droughts and the optimal irrigation of agricultural land. Satellite altimeters are often used to monitor water levels (ocean and inland waters such as lakes, rivers and dams) and the dynamics of ice sheets. However, due to the influence of surface roughness on the return waveforms captured by altimeters, they can also be used to estimate surface features such as surface soil moisture. Against this backdrop, the main objective of this study is to investigate the potential of conventional altimeters (Low Resolution Mode (LRM) satellite altimeters such as Jason series satellites, Envisat, Saral and...) and new generation altimeters (synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite altimeters such as Cryosat-2, Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6) in the estimation of surface soil moisture in the semi-arid region of Spain over the period from 2016 to 2023. To achieve this goal, level 2 (L2) data from the SRAL altimeter sensor of Sentinel-3A satellite along the pass of 644 and geophysical data record (GDR) from the Poseidon-3B altimeter sensor of Jason-3 satellite along the pass of 213 were used. In addition to the different acquisition geometry of these two altimetry satellites, the effectiveness of the re-tracking algorithms used in them in estimating soil surface moisture, was also questioned in this study. The relationships between the observed backscattering coefficients derived from 4 re-tracking algorithms (re-tracker: Ocean re-tracker, OCOG re-tracker, Sea-ice re-tracker and Ice-sheet re-tracker) in the L2 data of the Sentinel-3A satellite additionally 3 re-tracking algorithms (re-tracker: MLE-4 re-tracker, MLE-3 re-tracker and Ice re-tracker) in the GDR data of the Jason-3 satellite and the surface soil moisture obtained from ground stations (the closest ground station to the satellite pass was selected) were investigated. The results of the analysis, demonstrate a strong linear relationship between the scattering coefficients derived from the satellite data and the corresponding soil moisture measurements obtained from ground stations along the coverage of the two satellites. The best results (the highest correlation coefficient) for the Sentinel-3A and Jason-3 satellites were achieved with the Ocean Re-tracker (with a correlation coefficient of 0.75), and the Ice Re-tracker (with a correlation coefficient of 0.7), respectively. MLE-3 re-tracker in Jason-3 Satellite has also obtained a result almost similar to ICE re-tracker in one of the ground stations. While the results express the high performance of the Sentinel-3A and Jason-3 satellites in estimating surface soil moisture, they show the superiority of synthetic aperture radar altimeters over the conventional altimeters in estimating surface soil moisture in the area studied.

This paper, benefitting from seismic studies, investigates the lithospheric and upper mantle dynamics of eastern Iran, shedding light on the tectonic evolution of the Sistan mountain ranges from the Cretaceous period to the present. Historically, due to fewer seismic studies focusing on this area, the mountain ranges were only examined from a geological perspective. Previous studies encompassing petrology, geochemistry, and tectonics have provided valuable insights into understanding the dynamic phenomena of this region (e.g., Pang et al., 2013; Jentzer et al., 2022). However, with the expansion and utilization of various seismographic networks, accessing more information about subsurface structures has become feasible, potentially illuminating new dimensions of the geodynamics in this area. Recent seismic studies reveal a warm mantle beneath the crust of this region, indicating relatively active dynamics (e.g., Mahmoodabadi et al., 2023). The presence of a thinner lithosphere compared to surrounding regions, accompanied by high-velocity anomalies observed in the asthenosphere of this area, may indicate lithospheric dripping and separation of lower lithospheric portions. This process has led to the upwelling of the asthenosphere and heating of the remaining lithosphere and crust of the region (Mahmoodabadi et al., 2024). Additionally, receiver function analysis reveals crustal structures inclined towards the west, suggesting the involvement of underthrusting beneath the mountainous region, a phenomenon associated with crustal thickening (Mahmoodabadi et al., 2023). Seismic evidence, along with other geological indicators, contribute to establishing a structural evolution model for this region. The current crustal and lithospheric structure, as well as the topography of the Eastern Iranian Ranges (Sistan), have been shaped by a series of hierarchical events starting from the opening of the Sistan Ocean during the Cretaceous period (e.g., Pang et al., 2013). In the present study, we explain how subsequent intra-oceanic subduction brings the Afghan continental block to the subduction zone, resulting in crustal layering and thickening. Continental subduction is influenced by the buoyancy of the system, eventually reaching a point where buoyant forces acting on the continental lithosphere prevent further downward movement. This positive buoyancy can uplift portions of the overlying oceanic crust, leading to the entrapment of oceanic crust within the continental lithosphere, setting the stage for the existence of ophiolites in the region. The closure of remaining oceanic domains possibly played a significant role in shaping observable geological structures today. Convergence forces, combined with pressure on the remaining oceanic lithosphere, forced it to subduct beneath the Lut Block, initiating another phase of orogenesis and contributing to the formation of ophiolitic belts along the mountain ranges. Following the closure of oceanic domains, further continental subduction likely played a significant role in shaping present observed geological structures. Subsequent convergence forces led to lithospheric thickening, triggering the detachment of weaker portions of the thickened lithosphere. Thinning of the lithosphere, facilitated by asthenospheric melting and ongoing tectonic processes further enabled ductile flow in the lower crust, supported by seismic evidence such as the presence of low shear wave velocities. In summary of the findings, this study presents a new model of the tectonic evolution of the Eastern Iranian Ranges, revealing a complex interplay of diverse geological processes. These processes span from intra-oceanic subduction to continental collision, encompassing crustal thickening and lithospheric delamination. Through seismic studies and analysis of geological evidence, this research provides crucial insights into understanding the structural evolution of this region. Moreover, it offers implications for broader tectonic processes within continental collision zones.

The main purpose of the current research is to investigate the nighttime LST climatology in Iran. The study of the seasonal regime and annual temperature differences along with the identification of the role of different temperature thresholds and the spatial analysis of Iran's cold spots are among the climatic features studied in the current research. For this purpose, the MYD11A1 product (version 6.1) of the MODIS which is a key instrument onboard the Aqua Satellite with a horizontal resolution of 1000 meters has been used for a period of 19 years (2003-2021). This product is related to the nighttime passage of the satellite at 1:30 local time.<br />Satellite data were validated using daily soil temperature data from 174 meteorological stations. The accuracy of satellite data showed that the area average values of root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias error (MBE) compared with station data are 1.7℃ and 1.39℃ respectively. Also, the PBias statistics results show that the underestimation prevails in the night LST data compared to the soil temperature. In total, the MODIS sensor estimates LST in most regions of the country with an error of less than 10%, which indicates the high efficiency of the MYD11A1 product in assessing Iran's nighttime LST.<br />The findings showed that the combination of altitude and higher latitude has significant importance in the seasonal changes of nighttime minimum LST in Iran. So, the combination of these two factors plays an important role in the occurrence of the lowest night temperatures in the country in the middle parts of central Alborz and the highlands of Azerbaijan. Thus, the longest period of dominance of low temperatures in Iran is related to 38°N and 36°N latitudes, respectively. The results also indicate that the prevailing temperature zones in Iran fluctuate from the minimum temperature in January to the maximum temperature in July. In the transitional seasons, only April and October have distinct and independent temperature identities, and the rest of the months of the transitional seasons are either connected to winter or connected to summer according to the pattern. Examining the course of intra-annual temperature changes shows that the highest intra-annual temperature concentration and the highest homogeneity are observed in the summer season. On the other hand, the highest level of heterogeneity and the lowest level of temperature concentration are related to the autumn season. Examining the average nighttime temperature difference in Iran also shows that the highest values of the earth surface temperature difference occur in the winter season and the lowest values in the summer season. In a general view, the temperature difference curve fluctuates between a maximum of 56.6℃ in January and a minimum of 46.5℃ in July. Spatial analysis of nighttime temperature difference showed that the Lut desert experiences the highest average values of nighttime temperature difference throughout the year. In general, lack of moisture, very low percentage of cloud cover, lack of vegetation cover, and very low soil moisture seem to have led to high nighttime temperature fluctuations in the Lut desert. On the other hand, a narrow strip along the southern coastline of the Caspian Sea experiences the lowest nighttime temperature difference in the country. Clearly, the high humidity of the southern coastline of the Caspian Sea plays the main role in reducing the temperature fluctuations of this region. The geographical analysis of cold spots indicates that the coldest spots of Iran are observed in the high peaks, located in high latitudes. Also, the highest geographical concentration of cold spots in Iran is related to the summer season. Meanwhile, the largest spatial distribution of Iran's cold spots can be seen in the winter season, especially in December. The findings also indicate the existence of a regular annual cycle in the spatial arrangement of cold spots in Iran. In this way, in the warm period of the year, the cold spots of Iran are concentrated only in the middle part of the central Alborz. With the beginning of the cold period of the year, we are witnessing a northwest shift of cold spots toward the highlands of Azerbaijan. So that a bimodal pattern replaces the summer concentrated pattern. The bimodal pattern continues at the height of winter with the dispersion of cold spots in Alborz and Azerbaijan, but with the arrival of the warm period of the year, a southeast-ward shift of cold spots towards the Alborz Mountains begins, with the cold spots completely concentrated on the Damavand peak, this annual cycle ends in the summer season.

Surface temperature and pressure are significant atmospheric parameters that, along with humidity and precipitation, can be regarded as the most effective quantities in determining the global and regional climate in small and large spatial scales. This importance stems from the fact that they can affect the dynamic elements of the weather. Surface air temperature (ST), as a crucial element of climate, is widely used in studies related to meteorology, climate change, energy and the environment and its changes (especially due to global warming) have a substantial impact on health, human well-being, and the environment. On the other hand, atmospheric pressure plays a vital role in determining the exact weather conditions and the climate of a specific location on Earth, and it is closely related to wind patterns and the formation of weather systems. Furthermore, the effects of heating and cooling in the atmosphere can depend on the level of atmospheric pressure.<br />To improve our ability to gain a clear understanding of the mutual coupling between temperature and pressure changes on intra-annual to inter-decadal scales, research is required to describe the possible relationship between these quantities from different points of view. This relationship can be complex on some time scales. Hence, in the current research, with using time series of monthly reanalysis data, the relationship between surface temperature and pressure at sea level has been investigated in different time scales over Iran. Based on the analysis of the linear trend of the raw data in the statistical period of 1948-2020, a tendency of increasing temperature and surface pressure was observed in all regions of Iran. The highest increase in temperature has occurred in the north-east (1.6 °C to 1.8 °C), and the lowest increase in temperature has been found in the extreme northwest of Iran (0.4 °C to 0.6 °C), which can be attributed to the effects of global warming. In addition, the highest increase in pressure (more than 4.5 hPa) was observed in the extreme northwest of the country, and the lowest increase in pressure (less than 1.5 hPa) was found in the southern coast of the country. Based on correlation and regression analyses, the inter-relationships between pressure and temperature were investigated for the raw data as well as the filtered data (in different time scales). The results demonstrate that the annual component has a large impact on the correlation pattern between the raw temperature and pressure data. A phase difference of 5-6 months was observed between the common annual periodic component of the temperature and pressure. For the intra-annual components, there is a negative correlation (-0.5 to -0.6) in the northeast at the lag = 0 and in the southeast at the lag = 3 months. In addition, the highest positive correlation (+0.5 to +0.6) was revealed in the lag = 6 months in the southeast of Iran. For the inter-annual plus inter-decadal components of the temperature and pressure at the lag of zero, the highest negative correlation coefficient (-0.3 to -0.4) was observed in the east and northeast of Iran. In larger time lags, the correlation coefficient gradually becomes positive, which reaches more than +0.4 in a large part of the country at the lag = 200 months. Therefore, with a phase (time) difference of several years (2 to 16 years), the correlation pattern tends to increase over a large area of Iran, which in turn indicates the presence of common inter-decadal quasi-periodic components (but with a specific phase difference) in the time series of surface pressure and temperature. Scatter plots and regression modeling for the selected stations and for different scales included in the time series display unique patterns for the relationship between the pressure and temperature so that these patterns can change over Iran depending on the latitude of the selected station.

The temperature of the solar atmosphere steeply increases in the transition region from the chromosphere to the corona. In the coronal temperatures, the coronal hole, quiet sun, and active regions are visible in the solar corona. The magnetic field controls the solar corona. Different physical processes (e.g. magnetic reconnection, waves) play a role in the coronal dynamics, which cause plasma heating to millions of degrees. Then, it is essential to understand the role of these processes. A more exact analysis of the emission line profiles to investigate the dynamics and thermal behavior of the coronal and transition region plasma is spectroscopy. The spectral line profiles are proof of the structural evolution of the magnetic field and plasma temperature in the coronal holes and quiet sun. So far, the study of coronal spectral lines indicates that most line profiles are well-fitted based on a single Gaussian profile. However, some spectral lines avoid from a single Gaussian model because they have least one excess component. Observations display that 5 % to 10 % of line profiles have the blueward asymmetry in the quiet sun and coronal holes. Considering the mentioned advantages of spectroscopy, we use the formed Si IV 1394 Å spectral line in the transition region from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) raster in a central-equatorial region of Sun on 14 October 2015. Also, we make co-spatiotemporal raster images from Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) 193 Å, IRIS/SJI 1330 Å and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetograms. Our data includes quiet sun, coronal hole and bright points features. The Si IV 1394 Å spectral line profiles are fitted with the single and then with double Gaussian function. We apply three essential conditions to certify any spectral profiles as asymmetric profile by double Gaussian model, that is, (1) the asymmetric profile must have a goodness-of-fit greater ( ) than one for the single Gaussian fits, (2) the minimum intensity of the first and second component to be 20 DN and (3) the distance between the centers of the two components to be more significant than 20 km/s. 1598 asymmetric profiles that are found out of a total of 103,000 profiles. The four types of profiles are dominated as only blue wing, only red wing, two clear peaks and none of the three types (it has two wings). The most significant number of asymmetric profiles corresponds to a profile with a component on its blue side. The lowest number is possessed by profiles inconsistent with single and double Gaussian fitting models (two wings). The asymmetries are concentrated on positions with high magnetic flux density. Also, asymmetric profiles arise in the large-scale bright lane-like areas in the SJI 1330 Å raster map. Corresponding to these areas, the magnetic flux concentration in the HMI raster map shows most probably, the network lanes. This correspondence can indicate the magnetic source. The asymmetric profiles may be owing to the reconnection of the open magnetic field of coronal hole with the bright points’ loops for bright points inside and the boundary of coronal hole. Also, we may contemplate a similar plan for asymmetric profiles at the coronal hole boundary, where the open magnetic fields of coronal hole may be reconnected with the quiet sun's close loops. However, the asymmetry of profiles at quiet sun may be owing to the reconnection of closed loops at this region. It is clear that the blueward and redward asymmetry are signatures of downflow, and upflow that may be caused by magnetic reconnection. However, the bidirectional jets derived from magnetic reconnection at the forming height of Si IV 1394 Å may be a reason for the asymmetric profiles with two clear peaks and two wings. Magnetic reconnections below the formation height of Si IV 1394 Å in the transition region may be a reason for upflows. Also, the profiles with blue wing may be relevant to the upflow spread of jets. These profiles are mainly sited away from the jet footpoints and on the network jets. The reconnection events above the formation height of Si IV 1394 Å or coronal return flows may be a reason for downflows. The red wing of the spectral line profiles is probably relevant to the downflow arising from reconnections that mainly placed around the footpoints of grid jets.

The variety of produced variables at the surface and atmospheric pressure levels, appropriate resolution, and global coverage of the ERA5 reanalysis data have led its consideration both in numerous climate research studies and for predicting atmospheric parameters. The initial step in using reanalysis data involves its verification using observational data. Despite the scattered nature of measuring stations, observational data remains a practical dataset for this purpose, particularly in investigating thunderstorms. In this research, we have verified the accuracy of ERA5 reanalysis data in estimating of two convective parameters: the Lifted Index (LI) and Vertical Wind Shear (WVSH). To achieve this, we analyzed radiosonde data from nine stations across Iran (including Tabriz, Mashhad, Tehran, Kermanshah, Isfahan, Ahvaz, Kerman, Shiraz and Zahedan stations) in the period of 1990-2020. Statistical indicators were employed for comparison between the reanalysis data and observational data. Several constraints were applied to the data. For instance, both temperature and dew point profiles should be measured simultaneously. Profiles that terminated below the 6 km above the ground or provided data at fewer than 10 pressure levels were excluded. Additionally, some constrains were utilized to quality control wind and temperature gradients. Specifically: (I) Profiles were removed if the lapse rate in the mid-troposphere exceeded 9 K/km, (II) Profiles were excluded if the lapse rate in the low-troposphere exceeded 11 K/km, (III) Profiles were discarded if VWSH-1000 exceeded 35 m/s, (IV) Profiles were omitted if VWSH-3000 exceeded 45 m/s and (V) Profiles were removed if VWSH-6000 exceeded 70 m/s.<br />The VWSH was calculated across three layers at altitudes of 1000, 3000 and 6000 meters from the surface. Investigations were conducted on daily, monthly, seasonal and long-term time scales. On a monthly scale, the minimum (maximum) root mean square errors (RMSE) for VWSH-1000, VWSH-3000, and VWSH-6000 were approximately 3 (8.5), 3.36 (9.84), and 4 (20) m/s, respectively. The results showed that the ERA5 reanalysis data consistently underestimated the value of VWSH-1000 across all stations (except Ahvaz station in recent years). The estimation of VWSH-3000 and VWSH-6000 parameters exhibited both overestimation and underestimation in different months. Notably, the highest error in ERA5 data for VWSH-6000 occurred during January. Across most stations, the largest errors were observed during cold months (particularly for the VWSH-6000 parameter), while the smallest errors occurred during warm months. In conclusion, the results suggest that as the height of the investigated layer increases, the performance of ERA5 in generating the considered VWSH parameters at the stations improves, especially in recent years.<br />A comparison between reanalysis-LI and observational-LI indicatedes that the highest (lowest) error occurs during warm (cold) months of the year. Throughout the study period, the reanalysis data produced an error of at least 10 K (at Zahedan station) and up to 15 K (at Tehran station) in LI estimation. Except for Ahvaz station, LI was consistently underestimated across all stations. The monthly mean of reanalysis-LI reflected more unstable conditions, whereas the observed values indicated a more stable atmosphere. Consequently, reanalysis-LI may not be a suitable metric for distinguishing stability and instability in the considered stations. However, in Mashhad and Tehran stations, there were consistencies between the trend of annual average values from reanalysis and observational data. In other stations, this agreement becomes evident in recent years. However, in some stations, the annual average value of reanalysis LI has overcome the observations, while in others, it is the opposite.

Due to the lack of laboratory studies in the field of detection of aerosols and dust in Iran and in Yazd, in this study, using laboratory methods such as Cascade Impactor, a vacuum pump for sampling aerosols, Rotameter and other laboratory materials in the field samples have been analyzed for characteristics of dust particles such as PM10 and PM2.5 particles, and then the particle concentration has been obtained by weighing the specimens. Qualitative and quantitative studies of aerosols existing inside the dust storms is an effective procedure to identify their environmental effects and source detection. Increasing the frequency of these phenomena in desert areas with hot and dry climates, such as Yazd province, is another aspect of climate change, in that dry climates that are getting drier. On the other hand, increasing temperature due to global warming result in the extension of deserts. The main purpose of this study is identification and comparison of some the physical and chemical characteristics of aerosols existing inside dust storms with model results. For this purpose, we used 7-stage cascade impactor, with specific sampling rate and laboratory methods, aligned with PM2.5 and PM10 data.
In this study, four days of storms (3 and 23 May, 29 August and 29 September 2018) were examined. At first, with the use of 7-stage cascade impactor, aerosols of dust storm in the range of 0.4-10 µm are collected in different stages and their values were compared with PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations of particles with the reported values of environmental and meteorological organizations of Yazd city. Cascade impactor works with a specific pump in that the sampling inflow of air is 28.4 L/min in that the inflow was adjusted with a mechanical rotameter. The weight of filters was measured before and after the sampling. These filters were placed in the desiccator in order to eliminate the humidity from them. The results showed the compatibility of 24-hour accumulation of hourly data with cascade impactor results. Then, with using atomic absorption spectrometry device, the values of heavy metals such as Pb, Al, Cd in the samples related to the storms of 29 August and 29 September were examined. In the August 29 test, the lead element was in the low enrichment range (EF <3), and the cadmium element in most filters was in the high enrichment range (10 <EF <25). Also, in the September 29 experiment, the enrichment of the lead element was negligible, and the enrichment of cadmium was in the medium to severe range (5 <EF <10). Also, using HYSPLIT model and pairing with WRF model in five levels, the source and trajectories of the aerosols of storm were examined.

The aim of this research is to analyze the climatology of the Northern Hemisphere extratropical storm tracks in different seasons using the ERA5 data for the period 1979-2023. To do this, we applied the Lagrangian feature tracking method on the relative vorticity and the positive meridional wind at 850 hPa to identify storm tracks. A positive meridional wind extrema indicates the poleward advection of warm air in the east of a cyclone center, while a negative value points to an equatorward advection of cold air in the west of a cyclone center. Therefore, tracking the positive meridional wind extrema can be applied to identify the storm-driven intrusion of warm air into the Arctic, which can accelerate the Arctic sea-ice melting. It should be noted that in identification and analysis of storm tracks based on the feature tracking method, it is important to choose an appropriate meteorological field. For instance, if we apply mean sea level pressure (MSLP) to track storm tracks, the western parts of the Mediterranean storm track can be detected, while it is not possible to detect the eastern parts. Also, tracking the positive meridional wind extrema is more useful, compared to tracking the relative vertical vorticity at 850 hPa pressure level and MSLP fields, to investigate the impact of extratropical storm tracks on the Arctic sea ice, because this field is associated with the poleward advection of warm air. In this study, in addition to the track density and mean intensity of storms, we investigated the genesis and lysis densities. Also, we discussed the main entrance pathways of extratropical storms into the Arctic.<br />Our results show that storm tracks are the strongest in winter and the weakest in summer. The west of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans are active oceanic basins for the genesis of storms. The center of the North Pacific is also a secondary genesis region for oceanic storms, particularly in winter. There is a maximum of the genesis density in the east of the Rocky Mountains, and also in the Tibetan Plateau. In the former case, most storms reach a lysis maxima on the east coast of North America and west of Greenland. In the latter case, some storms reach a lysis maxima on the east coast of Asia and some of them enter the North Pacific and penetrate into the Bering Sea. In some regions, storm tracks are connected with each other. For example, the Atlantic storm track can feed the storm track in North Russia, while the storm track in North Russia can feed the Northeast Asian storm track. We identified noticeable stretching of the Atlantic storm track from the west of the North Atlantic to the Arctic, through the Greenland and Norwegian seas, which indicates the storm-driven intrusion of warm and moist air from the North Atlantic into the Arctic. Tracking the positive meridional wind extrema reveals a significantly higher lysis density in the Bering Sea compared to tracking the vertical relative vorticity extrema. Hence, storms that penetrate as far as the Bering Sea/Strait can bring heat and moisture from the North Pacific into the Arctic. This storm-driven intrusion of warm and moist air can cause a local melting of sea ice in the Arctic or slow down the sea-ice production, especially in winter.

In many cases, ensemble weather forecasts produced by numerical weather prediction (NWP) models exhibit systematic bias and under-dispersion. Over the past two decades, various ensemble post-processing approaches have been developed to address this issue. These approaches include classical methods such as ensemble model output statistics (EMOS), Bayesian model averaging (BMA), and advanced machine learning-based approaches.<br />In most ensemble post-processing approaches, it is implicitly assumed that there is statistical independence between different forecast margins, such as lead time, location, and meteorological variables. However, this assumption is not valid for realistic forecast application scenarios. End users may be interested in scenarios such as total hydrological basin precipitation, temporal evolution of precipitation, or the interaction of precipitation and temperature, especially when temperatures are close to zero degrees Celsius. Important examples include hydrological applications, air traffic management, and energy forecasting. Such dependencies exist in raw ensemble forecasts, but these dependencies are ignored if standard univariate post-processing methods are applied separately to each margin.<br />In recent years, various multivariate post-processing methods have been proposed. These methods can be categorized into two approaches. The goal of the first approach is to directly model the joint distribution by fitting a specific multivariate probability distribution. This approach is mainly used in low-dimensional problems or when a specific structure is chosen for the application at hand. For example, multivariate models for temperature across space, for wind vectors, and joint models for temperature and wind speed.<br />The second approach is a two-step approach. In the first step, univariate post-processing methods are applied independently to all dimensions, and samples are generated from the resulting probability distributions. In the second step, the multivariate dependencies are recovered by reordering the univariate sample values according to the ranking order structure of a specific multivariate dependence pattern. Mathematically, this is equivalent to using a copula (parametric or nonparametric). Examples include ensemble copula coupling (ECC), Schaake Shuffle, and the Gaussian copula approach.<br />This paper presents multivariate ensemble post-processing of temperature, two meter above ground using the ECC approach. The EMOS method is used for univariate post-processing. The performance of the raw ensemble, EMOS post-processed ensemble, and ECC systems is evaluated using energy score (ES) and variogram score (VS). The ECMWF 51-member ensemble system is used as raw data for the period from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2023.<br />The results showed that in addition to eliminating the bias of the raw ensemble forecast, the ECC method also preserved the dependence structure between the ensemble members. In contrast, the EMOS method only eliminated the biases without considering the dependence between the ensemble members. Because of its ability to preserve the dependence structure, the ECC method was able to achieve significantly better results than the EMOS method on a variety of metrics, including energy scores and variogram score. This suggests that the ECC method is a valuable tool for ensemble post-processing, and that it should be considered for a wide range of applications.

The air temperature near the earth's surface is one of the influential variables in various climate studies, hydrology and weather forecasting. In many areas, this parameter is usually measured with the help of weather stations located on the ground. Due to the lack of uniform spatial distribution of weather stations in areas with the different topography, in many inaccessible or unpopulated places, enough ground stations are not available to observe and record surface air temperature data. On the other hand, remote sensing satellite images are used as a potential alternative to describe temperature patterns with appropriate spatial details in large areas. Land Surface Temperature (LST) is prepared with the help of satellite observations. Although the LST product is related to the temperature of the air near surface (T2m), they have different behavior and characteristics. Therefore, many researchers, in order to overcome the limitation of ground-based air temperature data spatial resolution, try to establish a relationship between near surface air temperature and satellite LST.<br />The provinces along the Caspian Sea, such as Gilan and Mazandaran, are very important from various climatic, economic and agricultural aspects. Due to the vastness and diverse topography of these areas, the number of synoptic stations available in these areas is limited. On the other hand, so far, 2m air temperature modeling using satellite data has not been done in this region.<br />The main goal of this study is to create a suitable model for estimating this parameter using satellite LST data. For this purpose, using multivariate linear modeling method, a model was created between MODIS sensor LST and T2m air temperature in Gilan and Mazandaran region. The parameters used in this model include LST obtained from MODIS sensor, height, Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI), slope and curvature. The data collected between 2000 and 2017 were used to estimate the coefficients of the model, and the data from 2018 to 2020 were used to evaluate the model. In each province, separate models were estimated for night and day data and two different height categories. The comparison of the provincial model with the single-station model in terms of error statistics showed that the provincial model has little difference with the model constructed for each station. The results showed that the RMSE values in the provincial model are on average in the range of 2.60-3.11 degrees Celsius. The correlation coefficient of the T2m values obtained from the model with real observations was estimated to be more than 90%. In addition, the data of different seasons were separated and a separate model was presented for each season. On average, the use of the seasonal model led to an improvement in the estimation of T2m data in Gilan and Mazandaran provinces with RMSE of 2.72 and 2.55 degrees Celsius, respectively.
