The geographical location of Iran has placed many of its cities at risk from earthquakes. Lorestan, located in the western Zagros of Iran, is among the regions with high seismic risk. Positioned on the seismically active Alpine–Himalayan belt and at the collision zone between the Arabian and Iranian plates, the area experiences frequent and significant earthquakes. The central and western parts of the province are closely linked to the active Zagros faults, facing a high likelihood of seismic events. Beyond tectonic conditions, construction practices in Lorestan also contribute to increased vulnerability. Despite awareness of Lorestan’s seismicity and its history of severe earthquakes, evidence indicates that preventive measures and urban planning aligned with the existing risks have not been adequately implemented. Non-engineered buildings, substandard materials, high building density in deteriorated urban areas, and the absence of early warning systems are among the main weaknesses in reducing vulnerability.
In this study, the main data sources included 1:100,000 geological maps of the area, layers of earthquake epicenters occurring in the region between 1907 and 2023, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-1 satellite imagery, the 30-meter SRTM digital elevation model, and statistical information on the population and percentage of deteriorated urban fabric in the studied cities. The primary tools used were ArcGIS (for preparing the required maps), Google Earth Engine (for mapping urban land use and determining the percentage of open spaces), SuperDecisions (for weighting parameters using the Analytic Network Process model), and SPSS (for statistical data analysis). Based on the subject and objectives, the research was conducted in several stages. In the first stage, data layers related to the selected parameters were prepared, and after producing the layers for each parameter, the status of 11 cities in Lorestan Province (county centers) was evaluated according to each parameter. In the second and third stages, the information layers were normalized and weighted, respectively.
The analysis of earthquake epicenters show that the cities of Poldokhtar, Chaghabel, and Khorramabad have the highest concentration of earthquake epicenters and, therefore, the greatest potential vulnerability in this regard. In terms of distance from major faults, the cities of Aleshtar and Dorud, due to their proximity to main fault lines, have the highest vulnerability potential. Regarding slope, the cities of Nourabad and Dorud, with an average slope of 7 percent, have the highest mean slope percentage and thus the highest vulnerability potential for this parameter. In terms of population and population density, Khorramabad, Borujerd, and Dorud, with populations of 373,416, 264,947, and 112,638 respectively, have the highest population and consequently the highest potential vulnerability. In terms of population density, Nourabad, Aligodarz, and Borujerd, with densities of 10,254, 9,174, and 9,168 people per square kilometer respectively, show the greatest vulnerability. Regarding the percentage of deteriorated urban fabric, Borujerd (15%) and Aligodarz and Cheghabel (14% each) rank highest in vulnerability. For open space percentage, Aligodarz (13%), Dorud (14%), and Khorramabad (15%) have the lowest open space ratios and thus greater vulnerability. Additionally, in terms of compactness ratio, Borujerd, Aligodarz, and Aleshtar, with ratios of 1.24, 1.37, and 1.46 respectively, have the lowest ratios, indicating the highest compactness and greater vulnerability for this parameter.
A comprehensive assessment of seismicity parameters, distance from faults, slope percentage, population and population density, deteriorated urban fabric, open space percentage, and compactness ratio in the cities of Lorestan Province revealed significant differences in their vulnerability to earthquakes. The findings indicate that Lorestan, due to its location in the Zagros belt and proximity to active faults—particularly in cities such as Khorramabad, Dorud, and Borujerd—has a high seismic hazard potential. Khorramabad, with the highest vulnerability score (75.1), ranks first because of its high population density, closeness to major fault lines, and concentration of earthquake epicenters. Following it, Dorud (74.1) and Borujerd (72.1) show high vulnerability, resulting from a combination of natural and human factors such as high average slope, population density, and compact urban fabric. In contrast, Cheghabel (score 40) and the cities of Sarabdoreh (47) and Azna (52) exhibit lower vulnerability due to smaller populations, greater distances from main faults, and fewer earthquake epicenters. This analysis highlights that, in addition to geomorphological and seismic factors, urban physical and demographic characteristics play a decisive role in vulnerability levels. It also shows that deteriorated urban fabrics, a shortage of open spaces, and high population density significantly increase risk.

Recognizing the boundaries and edges of gravity anomalies is essential for understanding geological and tectonic features that arise from variations in density. In recent decades, a variety of filters and techniques have been developed and improved to delineate the edges of anomalous sources; however, these edge enhancement filters often present notable challenges, such as the introduction of false and spurious edges, sensitivity to depth variations, drawing fuzzy edges, and low resolution in the resulting edge detection maps. This study introduces a modified Gudermannian (MGDF) edge detection filter aimed at enhancing the clarity of output images, eliminating the occurrence of false and spurious edges in output maps, increasing the resolution of edge detection images, and effectively balancing weak and strong amplitudes from buried sources at different depths simultaneously. This technique has been crafted using the gradients of the total horizontal gradient (THG) in tandem with the modified Gudermannian function. The mathematical framework of both the Gudermannian function and its modified counterpart resembles that of the arctangent. The arctangent, when combined with the horizontal and vertical (directional) derivatives of the potential field at varying orders, plays a crucial and traditional role in the conception and refinement of edge detection filters for gravitational and magnetic data. To fulfill this goal, we first employed a range of standard and traditional edge detection methods (such as the total horizontal gradient (THG), tilt angle (TA), total horizontal gradient of the tilt angle (THG-TA), hyperbolic tilt angle (HTA), tilt angle of the total horizontal gradient (TAHG), modified total horizontal gradient (THG-STA), and Gudermannian (GDF) filter with coefficients of zero, two, four, six, and eight) alongside a modified Gudermannian (MGDF) effective method. The MGDF edge detection filter does not require any parameter or coefficient to regulate quality. The filtered synthetic gravity data were examined both in a noise-free condition and with Gaussian noise. A gravity model featuring four sources with different depths and both positive and negative densities was constructed within the MATLAB programming environment. Following the assessment and comparison of the proposed modified Gudermannian filter against other edge detection techniques (THG, TA, THG-TA, HTA, TAHG, THG-STA and GDF), we utilized satellite gravity data (Earth Gravitational Model 2008 (EGM2008)) pertaining to the Rafsanjan Plain in Kerman Province, Iran, to identify the locations of various structures and faults while evaluating the quality and practical functionality of the proposed filter. Considering the seismic activity in the region and the presence of diverse mineral resources, extensive geophysical studies and research have been conducted in this area. The Rafsanjan Plain in Kerman Province is characterized by four major faults, along with numerous hidden faults that constitute part of the Central Iranian System. Aligning with the Zagros Mountain ranges, it is a suitable location for assessing the efficacy of edge detection filters. Findings from both synthetic and field gravity data indicate the effectiveness of the proposed filter (MGDF) in clearly and accurately delineating the edges of gravity sources. Also, the false and spurious edges in the output maps are not observed. Thus, the modified Gudermannian filter can be reliably employed in the analysis and interpretation of gravity anomalies to offer a trustworthy qualitative assessment of geological, subsurface, and buried structures.

Determining the geometry and depth of sedimentary basins is a fundamental objective in geophysical exploration, particularly in regions with hydrocarbon potential. Magnetic methods are commonly applied for this purpose when sufficient magnetic contrast exists between the basement rocks and the overlying sedimentary sequences. The inversion of magnetic data, however, is inherently nonlinear and ill-posed, and conventional inversion approaches generally rely on iterative optimization schemes combined with regularization strategies to obtain stable solutions. While these methods have been successfully applied in numerous studies, their performance may depend on factors such as the choice of initial models, regularization parameters, and computational cost, especially in regional-scale applications. In recent years, data-driven techniques based on machine learning have been increasingly explored as complementary tools for addressing inverse problems in geophysics. Within this context, the present study examines the applicability of deep neural networks (DNNs) for the inversion of airborne magnetic data, with the aim of estimating the depth of the magnetic basement in the Rig-e Jen sedimentary basin, Central Iran.
Due to the limited availability of dense, labeled field data suitable for supervised learning, a large and diverse synthetic dataset was generated to train the neural network. The subsurface was represented by a simplified two-layer model consisting of a non-magnetic sedimentary cover overlying a magnetic basement. The basement surface geometry was constructed using ensembles of rectangular prisms with laterally varying depths designed to reflect geologically plausible scenarios. The lower boundary of the model was fixed at a depth of 25 km, while the average basement depth was randomly varied between 3 and 15 km. Magnetic responses were calculated along profiles 80 km in length with a sampling interval of 1 km, using the analytical formulation of Rao and Babu (1991). A constant magnetic susceptibility value of 0.034 SI was assumed for the basement, along with fixed geomagnetic field parameters. In total, 100,000 paired synthetic models and corresponding magnetic anomalies were generated efficiently to form the training dataset.
A fully connected multilayer perceptron (MLP) architecture was employed to approximate the nonlinear mapping between magnetic anomalies and basement depth. The network consisted of three hidden layers with 215 neurons each and utilized the GELU activation function. A normal initialization was applied to the network weights, and dropout layers were included to mitigate overfitting. Training was carried out using the AdamW optimization algorithm with a mean squared error loss function. The dataset was divided into training, validation, and independent test subsets to enable an objective evaluation of model performance. Tests conducted on synthetic data indicate that the trained network is capable of reproducing the general characteristics of basement topography. Additional experiments incorporating Gaussian noise with an amplitude of 10% demonstrate that the model maintains a reasonable level of stability under noisy conditions.
Following validation on synthetic datasets, the trained DNN was applied to airborne magnetic data from the Rig-e Jen region. A network of eight intersecting profiles, oriented along NE–SW and NW–SE directions, was designed to facilitate consistency checks at profile intersections. The estimated basement depths range approximately from 5 to 14 km, with greater depths predominantly observed in the northwestern part of the basin. Differences in predicted depths at profile intersection points average about 400 m, which is small relative to the overall basin thickness and suggests an acceptable level of internal consistency.
To evaluate uncertainty associated with physical assumptions, a sensitivity analysis was performed by varying the basement magnetic susceptibility within a realistic range (0.028–0.040 SI) while keeping the basement geometry fixed. The resulting variations in predicted basement depth were quantified using the standard deviation, providing an estimate of uncertainty linked to susceptibility heterogeneity. The mean standard deviation of the estimated depth was about 126 m, with a maximum of 417 m in deeper parts of the basin. The results indicate that susceptibility variations influence depth estimates, although the predicted basement geometry remains relatively stable over most parts of the study area.
In summary, this study demonstrates that deep neural networks can serve as a complementary, data-driven approach for the inversion of airborne magnetic data in sedimentary basins characterized by thick sedimentary cover. The proposed methodology offers a computationally efficient framework for estimating basement depth once the model is trained, while producing results that are consistent with regional geological constraints. The approach is particularly suitable for regional-scale investigations in data-limited settings and may be further refined through the incorporation of additional physical parameters or integration with independent geophysical datasets.

The aim of this study is to carry out a detailed Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) for Hamadan Province in western Iran, with particular emphasis on the seismogenic potential of the Nahavand Fault, and to compare the results with the design provisions of Iranian Seismic Code Standard No. 2800. The region lies within the active Zagros fold-and-thrust belt, where complex fault systems and heterogeneous seismicity patterns necessitate site-specific hazard analyses, especially for critical facilities. In this context, we assembled a homogenized earthquake catalog for the period 1990–2025, converted to moment magnitude using empirical relations developed for the Iranian plateau, and delineated seismogenic sources based on neotectonic, geological, and seismological evidence. Special attention was given to the geometry and segmentation of the Nahavand Fault, including its southern termination, where negative flower structures and distributed deformation indicate ongoing transpressional activity.
Ground motion parameters were estimated through Monte Carlo simulation of 50,000 stochastic earthquake scenarios combined with a logic-tree framework to account for epistemic uncertainties in source characterization and ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs). The logic tree incorporates alternative source models for the Nahavand Fault (linear fault source versus areal seismogenic zone), different magnitude–frequency distributions, and multiple regionally compatible GMPEs. For each realization, synthetic ground motion fields were generated and uniform hazard spectra (UHS) were derived at representative sites across the province for return periods of 475 and 2475 years, corresponding to standard and maximum-considered earthquake levels, respectively.
The results for a 475-year return period indicate a distinctly non-uniform spatial distribution of seismic hazard in Hamadan Province. The highest levels are obtained in Nahavand County, where the maximum peak ground acceleration (PGA) reaches 0.466g. This value is approximately 33.1% higher than the upper bound of the “very high relative hazard” zone defined in Standard 2800 for the region. Elevated hazard levels are also observed in areas located in close proximity to the mapped trace of the Nahavand Fault and its adjacent segments, reflecting the dominant contribution of this structure to seismic risk in the southern part of the province. For the 2475-year return period, the estimated spectral accelerations in the short- and intermediate-period ranges at sites situated near the fault trace exceed the corresponding code-based design values prescribed in Standard 2800, particularly for fundamental periods relevant to low- to mid-rise buildings.
These results should, however, be interpreted in light of the assumptions and limitations inherent in site-specific PSHA. The hazard estimates are conditioned on the adopted source geometry, maximum magnitude, recurrence parameters, selected GMPEs, and the quality and completeness of the input data. Epistemic uncertainties are explicitly treated through the logic-tree approach, while aleatory variability is represented by the dispersion in ground motion predictions; nevertheless, residual model uncertainty remains. Consequently, the findings are not intended to imply a general inadequacy or invalidation of the national seismic zonation framework or the philosophy of Standard 2800. Rather, they underscore the importance of conducting detailed local hazard assessments for critical structures, lifelines, and strategic facilities located in the vicinity of major active faults such as the Nahavand Fault. In such contexts, reliance solely on broad-scale national zoning maps may underestimate the true site-specific hazard, whereas complementary PSHA can provide more realistic input motions for performance-based seismic design and risk mitigation.

Time-domain airborne electromagnetic (ATEM) methods have gained a prominent role in mineral exploration, hydrogeological investigations, and environmental monitoring due to their rapid data acquisition, extensive spatial coverage, and capability to probe considerable depths. Despite these advantages, the quantitative interpretation of ATEM data remains challenging because of the inherent ill-posedness of electromagnetic inversion, the non-uniqueness of recovered models, sensitivity to noise, and the influence of systematic calibration uncertainties. These limitations necessitate careful implementation of forward modeling and inversion strategies, along with appropriate regularization techniques. In this study, the ATEM system response was investigated based on the fundamental principles of electromagnetism and established analytical formulations for one-dimensional (1D) layered-earth models. Both frequency-domain and time-domain representations were examined to provide a comprehensive understanding of the electromagnetic response behavior. Using widely accepted computational tools for forward simulation and inversion, the performance and reliability of these frameworks were evaluated through both synthetic modeling and real-data applications. Forward modeling conducted on synthetic layered-earth scenarios demonstrated that variations in electrical conductivity and layer thickness exert a strong control on the amplitude and temporal decay characteristics of the secondary electromagnetic fields. Specifically, shallow conductive layers generate high-amplitude responses with rapid decay rates, while deeper or more resistive structures produce lower-amplitude signals that persist over longer time intervals. These results highlight the sensitivity of ATEM data to subsurface electrical properties and confirm the theoretical expectations derived from diffusion-based electromagnetic theory. Subsequent inversion of the synthetic datasets showed that the general resistivity structure of the subsurface can be recovered with acceptable accuracy, although fine-scale features may be smoothed due to regularization and limited resolution. The inversion results emphasize the trade-off between data fit and model smoothness, which is a critical aspect of stabilizing ill-posed geophysical problems. In the applied stage, real ATEM data acquired from multiple survey profiles in Australia were analyzed to assess the practical performance of the methodology. The inverted resistivity sections revealed significant geological features, including deep conductive zones, near-surface resistive layers, and structural discontinuities associated with faults and fracture systems. These interpretations are consistent with available geological and geophysical information, demonstrating the reliability and effectiveness of the adopted approach. Overall, the findings of this study indicate that the careful application of standard forward modeling and inversion algorithms enables realistic estimation of subsurface geo-electrical structures from ATEM data. The method proves to be highly valuable for mineral exploration, groundwater assessment, and environmental studies. To further enhance the robustness and resolution of ATEM interpretations, future work should focus on incorporating prior geological constraints, integrating complementary geophysical datasets such as magnetic and seismic data, and advancing toward three-dimensional inversion frameworks. Additionally, systematic uncertainty quantification using stochastic or resampling techniques is recommended to better assess model reliability and reduce ambiguity in interpretation.

Random noise remains a persistent challenge in reflection seismic data processing, significantly degrading the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and compromising the accuracy of subsequent processing stages such as migration, inversion, and geological interpretation. Conventional noise attenuation techniques, including f–x predictive filtering, Radon transforms, wavelet-based methods, and singular spectrum analysis, rely heavily on predefined mathematical assumptions or fixed transform domains. While effective in structurally simple settings, these model-driven approaches often suffer from parameter sensitivity, inadequate adaptability to non-stationary signals, and substantial signal leakage, particularly in complex subsurface environments or low-SNR conditions. Conversely, emerging deep learning frameworks offer strong adaptability but demand extensive labeled datasets, lack physical interpretability, and carry a high risk of overfitting or unintended signal suppression. To bridge this gap, dictionary learning has emerged as a robust hybrid paradigm that learns optimal basis functions directly from the data, enabling efficient sparse representation of coherent seismic events while inherently suppressing incoherent random noise.
This study presents a comprehensive implementation and evaluation of a two-dimensional (2D) dictionary learning framework, specifically tailored for random noise attenuation in 2D reflection seismic data. Unlike traditional one-dimensional (1D) dictionary learning approaches that vectorize image patches—thereby destroying intrinsic spatial neighborhood relationships and introducing artificial high-frequency artifacts at block boundaries—the proposed method operates natively on 2D data blocks. By employing a separable dictionary structure constructed via the Kronecker product of horizontal and vertical atom matrices, the algorithm preserves the geometric continuity of seismic reflectors, including discontinuities such as faults, pinch-outs, and curved events. The workflow comprises three core stages: (1) extraction of overlapping 2D patches from the noisy section, (2) dictionary training using the K-SVD algorithm to iteratively update atom matrices based on sparse coding residuals, and (3) sparse representation of each patch via the 2D Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (2D-OMP) algorithm under a strict sparsity constraint. Since random noise lacks repetitive structural patterns, it requires a dense combination of atoms for accurate representation; consequently, enforcing sparsity inherently filters out the noise while reconstructing the coherent signal components. The final denoised section is reconstructed by averaging the overlapping processed patches.
The performance of the proposed 2D framework was rigorously evaluated using both synthetic and field seismic datasets, with quantitative comparisons against time-frequency peak filtering (TFPF), f–x singular spectrum analysis (FX-SSA), and classical 1D dictionary learning. Evaluation metrics included output SNR, reconstruction error (RE), local correlation coefficients to quantify signal leakage, and amplitude spectrum preservation. On a synthetic section contaminated with −4 dB random noise, the 2D approach achieved an output SNR of 11.81 dB and an RE of 0.1096, substantially outperforming the 1D variant (10.20 dB SNR, 0.1895 RE), FX-SSA (6.12 dB, 0.153), and TFPF (3.73 dB, 0.394). Notably, the 2D method demonstrated superior preservation of dipping events and fault discontinuities, with negligible signal leakage in the residual sections. A systematic parameter sensitivity analysis identified optimal configurations for patch size (22×22), dictionary dimensions (44×44), sparsity level (4–8), iteration count (50), and training patch sampling (5,000). The 2D framework exhibited greater robustness to larger window sizes and higher noise levels compared to the 1D approach, where vectorization-induced dimensionality explosion rapidly degrades reconstruction quality. Furthermore, the algorithm maintains stable denoising performance across a wide input SNR range (−8 to +8 dB), with the structural preservation advantage of the 2D formulation becoming increasingly pronounced under severe noise contamination.
Application to a real 44-trace field record corroborates the synthetic findings. The 2D dictionary learning method effectively attenuated random background noise while preserving high-frequency reflector details, lateral amplitude variations, and steeply dipping events. Local correlation analysis confirmed minimal signal loss, whereas conventional filters and 1D dictionary learning exhibited notable leakage. Spectral analysis further demonstrated that the proposed approach maintained the original frequency bandwidth without introducing artificial harmonic distortions or phase shifts.
In conclusion, two-dimensional dictionary learning provides a highly effective, interpretable, and parameter-stable solution for seismic random noise attenuation. By operating natively on spatial patches and leveraging separable dictionary structures, it overcomes the geometric degradation inherent in 1D vectorization, yielding superior noise suppression and signal preservation. This methodology holds significant promise for integration into standard seismic processing workflows, particularly in exploration scenarios characterized by complex geology, low SNR, and critical discontinuity mapping. Future developments will focus on computational acceleration through adaptive patch sampling and extension to 3D tensor dictionary learning for multidimensional seismic volumes.

Dust outbreaks are among the most critical environmental and meteorological hazards in western and southwestern Iran. Because dust occurrence and intensity are controlled by interacting synoptic-scale dynamics and near-surface conditions, improving dust monitoring and decision support benefits from combining a dynamical perspective with data-driven classification methods. The present study evaluates the performance of machine-learning classifiers in identifying and separating dust events that are dependent on versus independent of upper-level jet-stream conditions, with specific attention to the 250-hPa jet-stream level.
Hourly observations from 29 synoptic meteorological stations in the study region were compiled for the period 2010–2024. Dust occurrences were not identified solely based on reduced visibility, instead, dust events were first detected using dust-related present-weather codes reported in synoptic (SYNOP/WMO) observations. Horizontal visibility was then used as an auxiliary quantitative indicator to classify event intensity/type and to define the classification labels (e.g., separating dust-storm conditions associated with marked visibility reduction such as 200–1000 m from cases of suspended dust). To describe the atmospheric environment, dynamical–thermodynamic predictors were extracted from global reanalysis products over the same period. Upper-level circulation and jet-stream conditions were characterized at 250 hPa using geopotential height and horizontal wind (u and v components, or their derived wind speed as a jet indicator). Near-surface predictors included surface pressure, 2-m air temperature, and 10-m wind, representing the meteorological controlling parameters most directly linked to dust emission and transport. Reanalysis variables were collocated to station locations and temporally aligned with station reports.
Each dust-related sample was assigned to one of two synoptic regimes: “jet-stream present” and “jet-stream absent,” determined from the concurrent 250-hPa flow. For each regime, feature selection was performed using the Boruta algorithm to retain truly informative predictors while eliminating weak and noisy variables. The selected predictors were then used to train and test several supervised classification models, including Random Forest, XGBoost, Support Vector Machine (SVM), neural networks, and logistic regression. Model performance was assessed using Accuracy, AUC, and F1 score, and comparative diagnostics were summarized via radar plots (Where applicable in the analysis workflow, SHAP-based interpretation was used to support physical understanding of the dominant predictors.)
The findings reveal a strong regime dependence in both the dominant predictors and the most skillful classifiers. In the jet-present regime, predictors describing upper-level dynamics and the pressure field were consistently emphasized, including 250-hPa geopotential height and 250-hPa horizontal wind, together with surface pressure and near-surface wind. In this regime, ensemble tree-based models, particularly XGBoost and Random Forest, showed the highest skill for the binary (two-class) discrimination between dust-storm conditions (e.g., 200–1000 m visibility) and suspended dust. This performance is consistent with the more organized synoptic patterns typically associated with jet-stream influence, which enhance the learnability of nonlinear links between upper-level circulation, pressure configuration, and near-surface wind forcing. In contrast, in the jet-absent regime and in the four-class formulation, the relative contribution of upper-level dynamical predictors decreased, and the primary weight shifted toward near-surface variables, particularly surface pressure, 2-m temperature, and 10-m wind. Under these conditions, SVM with an RBF kernel exhibited the most stable performance across the four dust conditions, indicating that a smooth nonlinear decision boundary driven by near-surface thermodynamic–dynamic structure can be advantageous when upper-level jet constraints are weaker.
Overall, the results demonstrate that explicitly separating synoptic regimes and then using regime-appropriate predictors and model families can improve both the accuracy and the physical interpretability of dust-event classification in western and southwestern Iran. This regime-based, data-driven framework provides practical guidance for developing regional dust monitoring and decision-support systems, while also clarifying how upper-level jet-stream variability modulates the relative importance of upper-level versus near-surface meteorological controls.

A model of the global atmospheric electric circuit has been presented that is based on more realistic and up-to-date data and models for current generators and atmospheric conductivity. The World Wide Lightning Location Network data has been employed to estimate distribution of thunderstorms as the main sources of electric current in global electric circuit by means of the clustering approach. Thunderstorm clusters are combined with aircraft observations of electrified clouds to determine the contribution of thunderstorm and shower clouds in total conduction (Wilson) currents. The electrical conductivity of atmosphere results from the concentration of small ions in air and varies with height, because of the ion sources, e.g. cosmic rays, radon isotopes and terrestrial radioactivity, and the primary sink, e.g. aerosol particles of height profile. The CRAC: CRII, that is one of the most commonly used atmospheric ionization models, is employed to calculate the cosmic rays induced ionization rate; and radioactivity induced ionization rate is determined using an exponential vertical profile combined with an up-to-date data for surface Radon 222 ionization rate, as the main source of ionization agent in atmospheric boundary layer. Considering the aerosol particles to be monodispersed, the variation with height is represented by an exponential vertical profile. Based on these models and considering simple and well-known models for ion-aerosol attachment coefficients and ions mobility, the 3-dimentioal distribution of the atmospheric conductivity is calculated. It is found that near the earth surface the conductivity profile resembles radioactivity induced ionization rate, while at higher altitudes it looks like the cosmic rays counterpart. From the air conductivity profile, the columnar resistance, namely the resistance of a unit area column of atmosphere from the orographic surface to the ionosphere, is found and shown that the major contribution to the columnar resistance is the resistance of the boundary layer, where the ion production rate is relatively small and the loss rate is large. Total atmospheric resistance is the total resistance of all the column resistances summed in parallel over the world, taking into account the change with latitude of the area of each grid element. Production of total resistance and total conduction current gives us ionosphere’s electric potential, while electric potential at the surface of the earth is assumed to be zero. The global distribution of the downward air-earth current density which is independent of altitude, while affected by the orography and geographical coordinates via columnar resistance, is calculated and it is found that current density above land is larger than that of above sea. As the columnar resistance on high mountains is smaller, more air–earth current flows over those areas of the earth than others, in general. Atmospheric electric field, as one of the most studied elements of the global electric circuit, related to the local electrical conductivity and current density, is evaluated using Ohm’s law and its global distribution at different altitudes is presented. The model described in the present research is validated by comparing the global diurnal variations of the electric field with the well-known Carnegie Curve, which represents the mean diurnal variability of the global electric circuit. The model confirms that the global atmospheric electric activity peaks daily at ~20 UTC and it is found that the overall variation of electric fields at 3 positions are the same and similar to that of the Carnegie curve.

Sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events are frequently observed over the arctic and are exceptionally rare in the southern hemisphere. A major strong sudden stratospheric warming occurred in the southern hemisphere stratosphere in winter of 2002. The strongest SSW in the northern hemisphere was observed in winter of 2009. During these two phenomena, strong westerly winds associated with the polar vortex decreased, and temperature had a rapid increase in the polar caps. Majority of SSW episodes are associated with either a split or displacement of the polar vortex. These changes in the polar vortex are significant because they assist to determine the severity of warmings, which can affect regional weather, and can aid in the diagnosis of wave forcing’s. These can be studied effectively using the potential vorticity maps. We used the Ertel’s potential vorticity on the five isentropic levels between, 420 and 850K. We used the daily zonal mean data from the MERRA2 assimilated data and NCEP-NCAR reanalysis data. From MERRA2, daily zonal-mean zonal wind at 60° and average of zonal-mean temperature at polar cap were obtained at 6 level pressure from 150hPa to 10hPa from 15 November 2008 to 15 February 2009 and 15 June to 15 November 2002. From the NCEP–NCAR data, daily zonal and meridional wind components, temperature and geopotential height at 17 level pressure from 1000hPa to 010hPa were used and then computed Ertel’s potential vorticity on the isentropic surfaces. Then scaled the potential vorticity fields to vorticity units as in Dunkerton and Delisi (1986) and was estimated modified potential vorticity. This scaling was performed to provide fields with a similar order of magnitude throughout the stratosphere as opposed to potential vorticity only.
We first examined the time evolution cross section of zonally averaged temperature, zonal wind, static stability, absolute vorticity, Ertel’s potential vorticity over pressure surfaces and modify potential vorticity over isentropic surfaces to identify the warmings onset day, zero day and decay day for the trace of SSW and its relation with polar vortex, then for the determined three periods: before and after the zero day and the time of recovery. Next, we examined Ertel potential vorticity changes on different isentropic surfaces in the three periods introduced.
The results present that the Ertel’s potential vorticity in two cases of SSW due to the conservation factor or vertical profile of the potential temperature, was able to show the effect of SSW on the polar vortex, and the changes in the modified potential vorticity at different isentropic levels also revealed the SSW in the southern and northern hemispheres. In addition, the maximum (minimum) value of the modified potential vorticity in the northern (southern) hemisphere was estimated on the isentropic level of 600 K before the zero day of the selected SSW, and it was found that the location of the maximum and minimum cores in both hemispheres were in the range of 70 to 90 degrees north and south latitudes. Also, in the days before the warming, the minimum values of the Ertel’s potential vorticity at different isentropic levels in the 2002 SSW, were greater than the maximum values related to the 2009 SSW, regardless of their sign. Analysis of the minimum and maximum value of Ertel’s potential vorticity at the 600 K isentropic level showed that after the central day or zero day in the SSW of 2002, the position of minimum value gradually moved to the south pole, while the position of the maximum value in the SSW of 2009 shifted to areas further away from the north pole.

Extreme precipitation refers to intense rainfall events in which the amount of precipitation far exceeds normal levels and shows significant statistical anomalies. These events often lead to destructive consequences such as flash floods, soil erosion, and severe damage to civil infrastructure. The southwest region of Iran, due to its natural structures and the presence of major constructions such as dams, is highly exposed to the hazards caused by these rainfall events. Therefore, understanding the synoptic and dynamic factors influencing the formation of such rainfall events can be of great importance. In this study, extreme precipitation events were identified using daily data from the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) with a horizontal resolution of 1°×1° for the western and southwestern regions of Iran over the ten‑year period from 2013 to 2022. By setting the 95th percentile as the threshold for extreme precipitation, three case studies were selected based on the highest frequency and spatial coverage of grid points: November 23–25, 2014 (first), November 14–16, 2018 (second), and November 11–13, 2020 (third). In the next step, to conduct the synoptic and dynamic analysis of the three case studies, ERA5 reanalysis data with a horizontal resolution of 0.25°×0.25° were used. For the synoptic analysis, maps of mean sea level pressure (MSLP), temperature, specific humidity, and wind vectors at the 700 hPa level, geopotential height along with wind vectors at the 500 hPa level, and wind vectors at the 200 hPa level were presented. The dynamic analysis was carried out using the quasi-geostrophic omega equation in the form of the vector, which includes three forcings for upward motions: ‑vector divergence, diabatic heating, and the beta effect. The effects of these forcings on vertical velocity at different atmospheric levels, including 700, 500, and 200 hPa, were analyzed.
The results of the synoptic analysis indicated that three elements—a deep cold trough, moisture transport from the south, and the strengthening of the subtropical jet stream—were present during the occurrence of extreme precipitation in all three case studies. Nevertheless, their synoptic patterns exhibit differences, particularly in the mechanisms of initiation. In the first and second case studies, the simultaneous intensification of surface low pressure and the upper-tropospheric jet acted as the main driver, whereas in the third case study, the removal of blocking through the breakdown of a surface high-pressure ridge served as the primary prerequisite for the integration of activating factors. Finally, in all three case studies, the breakdown stage of the system occurs through the rapid eastward displacement of activating factors and the disconnection from the moisture source. The results of the dynamic analysis also showed that at the 700 hPa level, for the first and second case studies, the diabatic heating term was dominant and played a fundamental role in dynamic ascent over southwestern Iran. At the 500 hPa level, strong ascent continued in all three case studies, with the roles of ‑vector divergence and diabatic heating being evident; however, in the third case study, the effect of ‑vector divergence was dominant.

Anthropogenic climate change, driven by the escalating concentration of greenhouse gases, has posed fundamental and unprecedented challenges to both natural and human systems in recent decades (IPCC, 2021). Among the most pronounced consequences of global warming are shifts in the frequency, intensity, spatial distribution, and timing of extreme hydro-meteorological events, particularly precipitation. As the moisture-holding capacity of the atmosphere increases by approximately 7% per 1°C of warming—governed by the Clausius-Clapeyron relationship—numerous studies warn that spatial and seasonal fluctuations in precipitation regimes will inevitably intensify. Addressing this critical challenge, the present study investigates precipitation dynamics across Iran during the historical period of 1980–2014. The primary methodological innovation lies in first evaluating the performance of individual downscaled NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 models, followed by the development of a non-linear, exponentially weighted multi-model ensemble. Fundamentally, this research demonstrates how formulating a non-linear ensemble framework—one that accounts for the spatial variance in modeling errors by assigning geographically dependent weights—can substantially enhance the accuracy of precipitation simulations. We also examine how individual models perform against this proposed framework. Rigorous assessment of the capacity of NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 datasets alongside the proposed exponential ensemble (Exp-Ensemble) reveals substantial limitations in the individual models' ability to reliably capture precipitation patterns, particularly over complex mountainous terrain and coastal margins. When evaluated against GPCC observations, these individual models exhibit a pervasive dry bias of -25 to -50 mm yr⁻¹, coupled with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values of 127 to 155 mm yr⁻¹. Notably, GFDL and EC-Earth3 display anomalous deviations in precipitation variance; consequently, their spatial outputs across Iran's diverse topography exhibit high spatial uncertainty. Implementing the exponentially weighted multi-model ensemble strategy yielded a statistically significant reduction in these systematic errors. By calibrating grid-cell weights based on each model's historical skill across distinct climate zones, the overall RMSE was reduced to 108 mm yr⁻¹, while the dry bias decreased to -23 mm yr⁻¹. Despite these improvements, standard Bias-Correction Spatial Disaggregation (BCSD) algorithms continue to exhibit limitations. They fail to fully compensate for the unresolved sub-grid-scale processes in model outputs along the southern coastlines of the Caspian Sea. Intense precipitation maxima exceeding 1000 mm yr⁻¹ within this narrow coastal strip are systematically underestimated, with a peak of only 600 mm yr⁻¹ even within the integrated ensemble framework. This pronounced discrepancy highlights a simulated deficit exceeding 50% for this specific geographic sub-region. Ultimately, the arid and semi-arid expanse of Iran represents a formidable challenge for parameterizing precipitation schemes within the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). While it cannot eliminate the underlying dry bias ubiquitous across this latest generation of models, the weighted ensemble proposed herein successfully minimizes error variance. Integrating this methodology into broader climate impact evaluations and macro-level water resource policymaking effectively mitigates structural uncertainties, thereby establishing a rigorous baseline for future hydrological projections in Iran and geographically analogous regions worldwide.

Weather condition is one of the most important natural factors affecting the aviation industry. Although many details of climatological characteristics and long-term changes in some basic meteorological variables such as temperature, wind, and precipitation have been investigated, a few studies have focused on aviation-specific meteorological hazard. The present study analyzes the spatial and temporal variability of thunderstorm (TSTM) and low-level wind shear (LLWS), which both are aviation hazards. In this regard, ERA5 reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has been used to identify areas and airports prone to thunderstorms and low-level wind shear in Iran over a 45-year period from 1979 to 2023.
In order to determine the number of occurrences of hazardous conditions due to TSTM and LLWS, it is necessary to extract a threshold as an indicator of the potential hazard of each phenomenon. The CAPE index is often used to identify thunderstorm-prone environments. The convective precipitation index is also considered. Determining a threshold for LLWS is challenging. A value of 3 knots per 100 feet has been applied in this study. It should also be noted that due to the resolution limitations of the reanalysis data and the parameterization of many processes, the wind shear obtained in this study is mainly the result of synoptic-scale pressure gradients and is not related to local phenomena such as microbursts. Although the defined thresholds have a physical basis, it should be noted that they are merely indicators of a potential situation for hazardous occurrence. Such analyses are subject to probabilistic interpretation and may be accompanied by uncertainty. Therefore, the results obtained should be interpreted with caution.
The results of this study show that the areas located in the northern half, west, southwest and parts of the southern strip of Iran are more affected by the risk of thunderstorms than other areas. Additionally, regions in the east and center of Iran and limited parts of the northwest and west of Khuzestan and a major part of the Persian Gulf are affected by the risk of low-level wind shear formation. In summer, TSTM activity is mainly limited to the northern regions of the country, while in winter, this threat is transferred to the southern regions. The reason for this seasonal shift is that in the southern regions, the arrival of cyclonic systems from the northwest of Iran, along with the moisture transport from the Persian Gulf, leads to the strengthening of convective instabilities and an increase in the occurrence of this hazard. In the northern regions of Iran, during the summer season, the process of evapotranspiration caused by vegetation and local water resources plays a dominant role in providing moisture and, together with the intense heating of the earth's surface, leads to the formation of the TSTM hazard. The largest spatial extent covered by TSTM is observed in the spring season and the maximum hours of occurrence of this hazard are observed in the summer. LLWS has the smallest spatial extent in the autumn and summer seasons. However, in the summer, its maximum values are observed in limited areas of eastern Iran. This is mainly influenced by the activity of the 120-day Sistan winds. Also, in the west of Khuzestan province and a significant part of the Persian Gulf, the maximum occurrence of this phenomenon is observed in this season, which is due to the impact of the dynamic activity of the summer Shamal wind in this region.
