This formation has an overall thickness of 500 m consisting of intermittent limestone and inter-bedding shaly limestone in Shadegan Oilfield and the upper parts have reservoir qualities. In current reservoir characterization practice, after structural interpretation, correlation between reservoir properties and seismic attributes at well locations were firstly derived by statistical and neural network technics. Then this is and applied to seismic data accordingly and the reservoir parameters such as porosity and fluid saturation were expanded to seismic data and analyzed lateraly and vertically.

44739712-021 E-mail: maddahie@ripi.ir

In reservoir parameters estimation workflow, aside from internal seismic attributes, seismic acoustic impedance was also utilized that was indirectly constructed by seismic inversion from seismic amplitudes and well log data. Different seismic inversion technics were tested in Strata software in order to achieve the most credible seismic acoustic impedance volume. According to this analysis and considering conformity of the resulted values at well locations, Model Based inversion technic was finally selected as better correlation was observed between well log values and inverted results using this method. As the result, Model Based Inversion was chosen for computing acoustic impedance volume.
Estimation of effective porosity as one of important reservoir properties was carried out from seismic data and well log data of well 2 and 13 using multi-regression and artificial neural network technics. Sensitivity analysis which was conducted to obtain the optimum combination of seismic attributes showed that adding any other attributes to acoustic impedance is not conducive to better results in this project and will increase estimation error. The final correlation between effective porosity and seismic attribute is about 60 percent.
For fluid saturation estimation, another sensitivity analysis was carried out after extracting different seismic attributes. Finally, the most correlated seismic attribute and fluid saturation at well location is the Average Frequency. After this single attribute analysis, multi-attribute analysis was conducted to find the optimum combination of seismic attributes in estimation of fluid saturation. The result shows a maximum correlation of 52 percent between values of 1/AI and Quadrature Trace.
Artificial neural network methods are recently the center of notice for many researchers with regard to their non-linear nature of finding weights of estimation equation. Conducting several neural network techniques in this project showed that PNN technic contains the most effective training and estimation of water saturation. Using this method showed better correlation of 57 percent and error of 0.175 which is a slightly better estimation in comparison with the previous method. Finally this method was used for the estimation of water saturation throughout the reservoir volume.
Visualization and analysis of maps and volumes generated for reservoir parameters showed that reservoir zones pertaining to Bangestan Group are limited to Sarvak zone 2 and 4 in this field. Moreover, study of seismic attributes especially AI suggested that aforementioned reservoir zones have experienced facies variation in a way that there is two distinct facies zones with completely different AI values. Meaningful and conspicuous reduction in effective porosity in reservoir zone from north-west to south-east is also solid evidence ascribed to facies variation in this field. Importance of this issue was even more accentuated when these variations was juxtaposed to fluid saturation.
Simultaneous analysis of these three pieces of information showed that firstly Bangestan reservoir group in Shadegan field is under control of spatial faceis variation and secondly this resulted into relatively distinct separation of north-west/south-east reservoir parts with better reservoir quality in the north-west part. Sarvak zone 2 has good reservoir quality and accumulation of hydrocarbon in north-east and also central regions but poor reservoir quality and no considerable hydrocarbon accumulation in south-west parts. Finally, this study shows that the Sarvak reservoir zones in this field should be deemed stratigraphic as facies variations is a major factor in the reservoirs quality, so in the field development it is suggested that drilling of layers Sarvak 2 and 4 in the north-west part of field should be a priority. 2538-371X39120130421Development of the crust model for Iranian plateau using Bouguer anomaly extracted from EGM2008 geopotential modelبهبود مدل پوسته فلات ایران با استفاده از بیهنجاری بوگه مدل EGM200831433194410.22059/jesphys.2013.31944FAآرشمتشرعیاستادیار، گروه ژئوفیزیک، دانشگاه آزاد اسلامی واحد چالوس، ایرانJournal Article20110914Bouguer anomaly is the difference between the real gravity and the gravity of the reference potential, which does not contain the effect of the topographical masses above the geoid. B.V.P) for geoid computation that enable to combination of heterogeneousness gravity observation. In this B.V.P., any observation that has gravity information could be used as Boundary value; for example gravity acceleration from gravimetry, gravity potential from leveling, geoid from GPS/Leveling and geoid from Satellite Altimetry, astronomical observation and etc. Gravity Field of the earth has an influence on the geodetic observations. So all of geodetic observations have gravity information and used in geoid determination as boundary value in B.V.P (Safari, 2004).
In precise geoid computation and gravity field modeling, combination of gravity observation with different type makes high degree of free down and precision. In this paper, geoid from GPS/Leveling () and satellite altimetry () is used as boundary value beside the gravity acceleration observation () for gravity field modeling. The steps of geoid computation are given by Jomegi, 2006.
The fix- free two boundary value problem is a Laplace-Poisson partial differential equation (Ardalan, 1999). The summary of the Over determine Nonlinear Fix- Free Two Boundary Value Problem is given in table 1.
In table 1, the is gravity potential, is angular of velocity of the earth, is mass density of the earth, is Newton gravitational constant, is mathematical expectation operator, is the mathematical expectation of the norm of gravity acceleration vector, is the mathematical expectation of geoid from satellite altimetry, is the mathematical expectation of geoid from GPS/Leveling, is geoid's potential, position vector of point on the physical surface of the earth or geoid and is position vector of point on the reference ellipsoid.

For solving this B.V.P., the external space of the reference ellipsoid should be harmonic, this means where there are no masses. For this problem and linearization of F.F.T.B.V.P, the reference effect involve ellipsoidal harmonic expansion of the earth up to degree/ order 360/360 and residual topography, is removed from quantities in table 1. Therefore, the B.V.P. for gravity observations converts to B.V.P. for incremental quantities. The summary of the Over determine linear Fix- Free Two Boundary Value Problem for incremental quantities is given in table 3.
As we see in table 3, after the removal step, the field differential equation becomes a Laplace equation for out of the reference ellipsoid .
The ellipsoidal Abel-Poisson integral is the solution of field differential equation on the reference ellipsoid with boundary data type of gravity acceleration. For more study about Abel-Poisson integral, refer to (Ardalan, 1999) (Safari, 2004) (Jomegi, 2006).
The ellipsoidal Abel-Poisson integral observation equation is shown in table 4. The inverse Ellipsoidal Able- Poisson integral equation converts incremental gravity acceleration on the observation point, located on the earth to incremental gravity potential at the reference ellipsoid. This means downward continuation.

In table 4, are three components of the reference gravity acceleration vector () in Jacobi Ellipsoidal coordinates , is weight function and is the modified Abel-Poisson kernel.
The aim of gravity field modeling and geoid determination is computation of gravity potential on the reference ellipsoid. So, in this paper, the ellipsoidal Abel-Poisson integral is used as an observation equation for gravity acceleration beside the equation of geoid from Satellite altimetry and GPS/Leveling to compute of incremental potential on the reference ellipsoid is shown in equation 1.
(1)
This equation system is over determine and Ill-Posed problem (Jomegi, 2006). So the regularization should be used for computation of incremental potential on the reference ellipsoid.
Regularization has been applied by implicitly assuming that the weight matrix of measurements is known. If measurements are assumed heteroscedastic with different unknown variance components, not all regularization techniques may be proper to apply, unless techniques of variance component estimation are directly implemented. Although variance component estimation techniques have been proposed by R.Koch, to simultaneously estimate the variance components and provide the regularization together. The steps of R.Koch method is shown in figure 1.

Figure1. Technique of variance component estimation By R.Koch.

In this research for the first time, a new method for variance estimation by R.Koch (Koch K-R, Kusche J, 2002) is used for estimation of variance component and regularization of boundary value in type of (1) gravity acceleration vector, (2) geoid from satellite altimetry and (3) geoid from GPS/Leveling involved in over determine, linear Free-Fixed Two Boundary Value Problem. With this method, all of gravity observation could be used for gravity field modeling and geoid computation together involved in FFTBVP.
The verity of this method is tested in Coastal region of Pars. The result shows the ability of R.Koch method to use in gravity field modeling by heterogeneous gravity observations. 2538-371X39120130421A comparison between the direct transform and the inversion of AEM data in frequency domain for a layered earthمقایسه تبدیل مستقیم و معکوس دادههای الکترومغناطیسی هوابرد حوزه بسامد

HEM systems include a “bird” or sensor containing one or more pairs of transmitting and receiving coils. The separation between the rigidly mounted transmitting and receiving coils of a coil-pair typically lies between 4 and 8 m. The EM bird is towed under the helicopter by a 30–50 m long cable. This distance is optimum to minimize the helicopter effects. The modern HEM systems use a multi-frequency devices operating at 4–6 frequencies ranging from 200 Hz to 200 kHz. The receiving coil measures the voltage induced by the primary field from the transmitting coil and by the secondary field from the earth. As the secondary field is very small compared to the primary field, the primary field is generally bucked out and the ratio between the secondary and primary fields is presented in ppm. If there are good electrical conductors below the measuring line there are electrical current induced give rise to a phase shift between the primary and secondary field. This means that the measured data is a complex quantity having in-phase and quadrature components.
There are two classes of interpretation tools to apply to HEM data that provide information to understand geological structures and processes. These are either direct transformation of data into a generalized half-space model at certain data frequencies, or inversion of multi-frequency data sets to prepare a layered (1-D) resistivity model of the earth.
In the transform method, the earth is assumed as a homogeneous half-space and then the resistivity of such an earth for each of data- associated to each frequency- is calculated. So, this method has the advantage of yielding a single solution for the given output parameter, and the disadvantage that the output parameters may provide a poorly resolved image of the geology.
In the inversion method used here, the earth is divided to some horizontal layers and each layer has its own resistivity and thickness. So, this method has the advantage of yielding a much better resolution for the given output parameter and the disadvantage that this method are slower compared to transform methods.
In this paper we compare the results using two methods for synthetic and real HEM data. Results from synthetic data show that the inversion method reveals more real structures than the transform method. On the other hand, because the calculated resistivity from transform method is proportional to the imaginary to real component ratio of secondary field at the same frequency, we can just have the number of resistivity values equal to the number of frequencies. But in inversion methods, we can increase the number of layers and get models with more resolution than models created by transform methods. Besides, because transform methods uses a homogeneous half-space to calculate the resistivity for each frequency, the calculated resistivity is an average resistivity of subsurface structures. However, the results from both methods are comparable at the surface. This is because of the fact that higher frequency EM signals cannot penetrate much into the ground, the resistivities associated with these high frequency secondary signals are about surface layers.
Applying the methods on real data confirm that the inversion method creates more reasonable models with better resolution than the models obtained using the transform method. Moreover, the models from inversion method can discriminate a resistive layer beneath the conductive layer much better than the models using transform method.
The results from this survey reveal that the inversion method yields better models than the transform method. But if the main aim of the field work is a reconnaissance work, not an exact exploration work, the transform method is proposed because its calculations are much lower than the inversion method. 2538-371X391201304213D Inversion of ground magnetic data of Gazestan area based on

After investigations performed about 1D and 2D modeling in recent decades, nowadays most of the investigations about potential field are based on 3D inversion modeling. The goal of the magnetic inversion is to obtain, from the extracted anomaly data, quantitative information about the distribution of the magnetic susceptibility in the ground. Thus it is assumed that the input data to the inversion program is the extracted residual anomaly and programs in the library are developed accordingly.
In this study, we present a method for magnetic data inversion to make 3D susceptibility models of an area with a suitable potential of Iron-ore. We have used Mag3D program which uses the nonlinear Li, Y. and Oldenburg, D. W., algorithm. It determines the best model to show susceptibilities of bodies with an iterative approach.

88630548-021 E-mail:boskooi@ut.ac.ir

In This program susceptibilities are assumed to be small. This means that results will be wrong when susceptibilities are higher than that which causes self-demagnetization. The model is specified using a mesh of rectangular cells, each with a constant value of susceptibility and topography. Furthermore we assume that the remanent magnetization is zero and the magnetization effect is negligible. Thus in this paper the induced magnetization has been used.
The inversion is solved as an optimization problem with the simultaneous goals of(i)minimizing an objective function on the model and (ii)generating synthetic data that match observations to within a degree of misfit consistent with the statistics of those data. To counteract the inherent lack of information about the distance between source and measurement, the formulation incorporates a depth or distance weighting term. For improving the results of the inversion method, priorigeophysical or geological information have been incorporated. Even in Gazestan area there will be some geological information available in addition to the geophysical data. These constraints can be supplied to the inversion software, with adjustable levels of certainty, via a reference model of expected properties, bounds on the expected properties, or smoothness weights based on positions and orientations of the rocks. The constraints can come from mapping, sampling, analogous areas, or neighboring regions. The depth weighting function is designed to counteract the decay of the potential field response with distance from the source so that all cells have an equal likelihood of containing sources. This is necessary as there is no inherent depth information contained in the observed potential field response and a default solution to the inverse problem would result in a model with sources clustered near the surface. The depth weighting function has the form (Li and Oldenburg, 1996). In later stages of exploration and development additional information from drilling, detailed structural interpretation, trenching, and even preliminary mining will also be available.
To test the accuracy of the method, we have compared the results with boreholes data. Finally, the model shows three huge anomalies in this region. The largest anomaly is located in the middle of the area of study with the average thickness of 80 m. 2538-371X39120130421Estimating source parameters of 2D magnetic sources from special function: euler deconvolution, analytic signal and analytical expression of the anomaliesبرآورد پارامترهای منابع مغناطیسی دوبُعدی از روی تابعهای ویژه شامل اویلر، سیگنال تحلیلی و پاسخ تحلیلی بیهنجاریها891053194810.22059/jesphys.2013.31948FAکمالعلمداردانشجوی دکتری اکتشاف معدن، دانشکده معدن، نفت و ژئوفیزیک، دانشگاه صنعتی شاهرود، ایرانابوالقاسمکامکار روحانیاستادیار، دانشکده معدن، نفت و ژئوفیزیک، دانشگاه صنعتی شاهرود، ایرانعبدالحمیدانصادریاستادیار، دانشکده مهندسی معدن و متالورژی دانشگاه یزد، ایرانJournal Article20110510

3395509-0273 kamkarr@yahoo.com E-mail:

Generally, the analytic-signal and the Euler-deconvolution techniques have been widely used for estimating subsurface magnetic or gravity source parameters. The main advantage of using these two techniques is that we can delineate geological boundaries and determine depths to sources without considering the ambient earth magnetic parameters. However, in the traditional Euler-deconvolution method, an a priori selected structural index is usually used to estimate the causative source position. Unfortunately, the geometric type of a subsurface magnetic source is also a parameter that a geologist or geophysicist would wish to determine. Moreover, the datum level of a magnetic anomaly usually involved in the traditional Euler-deconvolution method is difficult to determine unambiguously, that results in the dependence of the structural index on the datum level. An incorrect structural index causes spatially diffuse Euler solutions.
Estimation of the depth of a buried structure from the magnetic data has drawn considerable attention. Different numerical methods have been given in the geophysical literature. The most commonly used of these methods are Werner deconvolution and Euler deconvolution. In these methods, the depth determination problem is transformed into the problem of finding a solution to a system of linear equations. The methods are sensitive to errors both in anomaly amplitude resolution and in determination of vertical and horizontal gradients, which are highly sensitive to noise.
A variety of semi-automatic methods, based on the use of derivatives of the magnetic anomalies, have been developed for the determination of causative source parameters, such as locations of boundaries and depths. One of these techniques is the analytic signal method, which was initially used in its complex function form and makes use of the Hilbert transform. It does not require knowledge of the magnetization direction and therefore it is useful in cases of remanent magnetization. Initially, it was successfully applied on profile data. The method was further developed by Roest et al. (1992) for the interpretation of aeromagnetic maps. In the analytic signal method, it is typically assumed that the causative sources are 2D geological structures, such as contacts, dikes and horizontal cylinders. For these models, depths can be obtained either from the width of the analytic signal anomalies or based on the ratio of the analytic signal to its higher derivatives if the source type is assumed. However, correct estimation of the depth is obtained only when the source corresponds to the chosen model. Several attempts have been made to use the analytic signal method to provide both the depth and model type of magnetic sources However, all these attempts are based on the location of the maximum for defining the source location and the value of the maxima being used to define the type of source.
Few methods have been developed to determine the shape of the buried structure from magnetic data. Barbosa et al. (1999) presented a criterion for determining the correct structural index that is related to the shape of the source and is applied in magnetic interpretation using the Euler deconvolution method.
We propose an interpretational approach using the analytic signal and Euler deconvolution to estimate the magnetic source parameters of a 2D contact, a thin dike and a cylinder. The major advantage of using a joint analysis is that not only we can determine the depths and possible geometric types (structural indices) of magnetic sources, but also we can estimate the structural dips and magnetization contrast. The results can avoid solution bias from an inappropriate magnetic datum level and can determine the horizontal locations, depths, structural types (indices), magnetization contrasts and/or structural dips. The synthetic models show that the feasibility of the proposed method is quite good. However, if the magnetic interference between two adjacent structures is too large, the method fails to solve the magnetic parameters. The maximum amplitudes (peaks) of the analytic signal in the 2D profile can also be used as an auxiliary method for judging the existence of probable solutions at the same locations. In real data, the structural index of a simple 2D model must be assigned for further estimation of the magnetization contrast and structural dip of the model. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, we analyze a magnetic profile across the Formosa Canyon, south-west Taiwan. For this real data, several different data windows were tried in order to obtain the best depth and structural-index solutions. Results show that good depth and structural-index solutions are placed at the locations where the analytic signal generally displays maximum amplitudes (peaks). Also the proposed method tested on ground magnetic profile from Surk Iron ore in Yazd Province in which the depth and structural index have broad correlation with exploratory drilling.
2538-371X39120130421An improvement of water saturation calculation using well logs and laboratory data in carbonate hydrocarbon reservoirsبهبود محاسبه اشباع آب در مخازن هیدروکربوری کربناته بهکمک دادههای

It is assumed that all void spaces in a reservoir consist of water and hydrocarbon, therefore: Sh = 1-Sw, wherein Sh and Sw are hydrocarbon and water saturation respectively. Since estimation of hydrocarbon saturation is not generally an easy task, it is recommended to determine the water saturation and predict the saturation of hydrocarbon using the above equation. The estimation of this important reservoir petrophysical parametere (i.e. Sw) is commonly determined by various electrical and prosity logs using the following formula (Moradzadeh and Ghavami, 2001) for a clean (non shaly) formation:
where Rt is the corrected total electrical resistivity of formation obtained from resistivity logs, is porosity of the rock obtained by porosity logs such as sonic or density, Rw is the water resistivity obtained from self potential (SP) logs or production tests, is a constant which depends on rock type and tortuosity of the fluid path, and m and n are unknown cementation and saturation exponents which need to be determined by petrophysical studies using core data of each formation. The value of is 0.6 for unconsolidated sandstones, 0.8 for consolidated sandstones and 1 for carbonates (Kamel and Mabrouk, 2002).
The porosity can be quite accurately determined from nuclear or acoustic logs. The uninvaded resistivity Rt is more difficult to obtain because all resistivity measurements are influenced by the resistivity of nearby layers and by the resistivity of the invaded zone in the immediate vicinity of the borehole wall. Generally, Rt is calculated through a combination of shallow, medium and deep resistivities from induction or laterolog tools.
Using of this method is not possible in shaly (unclean) and heterogeneous formations. In shaly sands, the presence of clay adds an additional conductivity. This additional conductivity will cause an error in water saturation estimation. In this cases varios models of water saturation has been proposed (Worthington,1985; Kamel and Mabrouk,2003; Alimoradi, et al., 2011). In carbonate reservoirs, wide range and irregular distribution of pore sizes change the rock conductivity and adversely affects the precision of Archie’s formula in Sw estimation. The effect of pore size and pore distribution in the evaluation of water saturation in these kind of rocks were studied in few research work in which the proposed equation of Lucia (2007) is perhaps the most significant contribution in this regards. As these methods are essenstialy based on well logs data and some assumption that may not be correct in some real practical cases, so in some situations the results of these methods are not so accurate.
As carbonate rock forms the most promineint hydrocarbon reservoirs in the world and in particular in the Middel East, therefore an accurate water saturation estimation method is highly required. In these reservoir rocks it seems a method based on the core data, hydraulic flow unit concept, capillary pressure and Leverett function which is established for clastic (sandstone) reservoir could be effective to estimate Sw preciesly.
In this paper it is attempt to use a set of high accuracy laboratory core tests data to present an improved method for calculation of water saturation within a carbonate reservoir in the southern part of Iran. This method is implemented in the following 10 steps, once the reservoir carbonate rocks were classified using hydraulic flow units concept.
1. Calculation of J functions by Garrouch (1999) formula for all lab data using permeability (k), porosity ( ) and mercury injection capillary pressure (Pc) data of each rock sample as well as surface tension ( ) and contact angle ( ) of the fluid in lab condition.
2. Calculation of mean hydraulic radius for each core sample (RQI).
3. Plotting Swir from Pc data against RQI and deriving the best equation. This can be used to predict Swir for any given permeability (k) and porosity ( ) data.
4. Calculation of by normalizing Sw; = (Sw – Swir)/(1 – Swir)
5. Plotting J function against and deriving equation of the straight line on a log-log plot for each hydraulic unit of the reservoir.
6. Calculation of height above free water level for the reservoir.
7. Calculation of Pc and then J functions using k, , and values of the reservoir for any given height above oil-water or gas-oil contact.
8. Determination of from the J versus relationship derived in setp 5 and J function values determined in step 7.
9. Calculation of reservoir Sw, using of step 8. (Sw= .(1- Swir)+Swir))
10. Comparison of the calculated Sw (from step 9) with already available log Sw values.
In this study it has been shown how water saturation values within a well are estimated by integration of mercury injection capillary pressure data, classification of carbonate rocks using hydraulic flow units, and also relation between the Levert function and normalized water saturation. The obtained results and its comparison with those of well logs data indicates that the presented method is capable enough to determine water saturation in carbonate hydrocarbon reservoir precisely.
2538-371X39120130421Comparison of attitude determination based on four and three onboard GNSS antennae, case study: hydrographic applicationsمقایسة تعیین پارامترهای وضعیت در هیدروگرافی با استفاده از

Commonly, the attitude parameters are obtained by inertial sensors, comprised of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and gyro-compasses. On the other hand nowadays, thanks to the availability of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), like GPS, determination of the attitude parameters of the platforms by multiple onboard GNSS antennae has been among the studied topics in the different environments. The main idea behind the mentioned approaches is application of at least three onboard GNSS antennae and the use of double difference carrier phase observations for high-accuracy. From the theoretical point of view, the attitude determination requires establishment of the body frame (BF) and local level (LL) coordinate systems onboard the platform, while assuming the platform is a rigid body and the locations of the onboard antennae are unchanged throughout the experiment. Practically, the BF coordinate system is realized at the phase center of one of the onboard GNSS antennae, hereafter Ant. 1, the x- and y-axes along the transverse and longitudinal axes of the platform respectively, and the z-axis is perpendicular to the x-y plane, positive upward. The LL coordinate system is defined by its origin at the Ant. 1, the x- and y-axes along the geodetic east and north, and the z-axis is perpendicular to the horizontal plane, positive upward.
The multiple GNSS antennae for attitude determination can generally be categorized into dedicated systems, i.e. by using several onboard antennae and one receiver, and non-dedicated systems, i.e. by using several receivers with their corresponding onboard antennae. According to the current studies both systems lead to the same level of accuracy, though the dedicated systems may result in more cost effectiveness. From the computational point of view, the GNSS attitude determination algorithms can be based on either direct method or least squares. Within the direct algorithms the attitudes are determined by using the coordinates of the onboard GNSS Ant. 2 and Ant. 3 with respect to the LL coordinate system centered at the phase center of the Ant. 1. However, in the latter approach, the Euler angles are obtained by transforming the position vectors of the onboard antennae from the BF to LL coordinate systems through the rotation matrices containing the rotation angles. It is worth mentioning that the least square methods in their linearization process require some approximate values for the attitudes, which are commonly provided by the direct methods. Owing to the rigidity assumption of the platform, the BF-coordinates of the onboard antennae need to be determined once. The LL-coordinates can be obtained by using the relative coordinates of the onboard antennae in the Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed (ECEF) coordinate frame with respect to the Ant. 1.
The goal of this study, besides the representation of the GNSS-based attitude determination methods, is assessment of their obtainable accuracies by using different onboard antennae configurations. More specifically, we have compared two configurations based on three and four onboard GNSS antennae. For this purpose, we have started presenting the mathematical setup of attitude determination in details and then have organized a case study based on field operation. Considering the fact that one of the common application fields of the attitude determination is hydrographic surveying, e.g. for dredging, pipe-laying, and rig installations; we have selected a 27-meter long hydrographic survey vessel belonging to the National Geographic Organization (NGO) of Iran as the test platform. The vessel was equipped with four dual-frequency Javad GNSS receivers with choke-ring antennae mounted on a 15 m rectangular frame. Furthermore, a Leica GPS receiver antenna was established at the wharf as the base station for relative dynamic positioning. The marine experiment was performed in the surrounding waters of Kish harbor at different cruise ground speeds ranging from 5 to 12 knots, while the GNSS observations were continued with update rate of 1 Hz. The BF coordinates of the onboard GNSS antennae were determined by surveying measurements, when the vessel was on dry dock for some repair jobs. The GPS-derived ECEF coordinates of the onboard antennae were used to derive the LL coordinates of all the antennae with respect to LL-frame centered at the Ant. 1. The number of instantaneous visible satellites during the field operations reached up to 15. By considering the derived attitudes based on four GNSS antennae as the benchmark, the RMS’s of the attitudes obtained by three antennae configuration were computed. According to the results, the RMS values of the roll, pitch, and yaw angles are 2' 43", 4' 46", and 21’ 26", respectively. This clearly indicates that application of four GNSS antennae has significant improvement in the accuracies of the yaw and pitch angles, while the improvement in the roll accuracy is only marginal. Having done this experiment, we recommend implementation of four GNSS antennae configuration for delicate applications.

88009560-021 E-mail:sharie@ut.ac.ir

In the present study the total atmospheric ozone distributions over Iran area for different seasons have been studied using data of OMI satellite and the ground station of the Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran for 2007-2008. The mean daily ozone satellite data are available that are used for 10 points, representing the stations of main province centers around Iran. The data of ground station for Tehran is also used in order to check the satellite data that shows the difference between the two is less than 3 percent.
The mean regional value of total ozone concentration for 2007 was 291 DU, while the maximum and minimum mean monthly values were respectively found for March, 328.2 DU and for October, 267 DU. The annual range of mean ozone variations over the area is 248-360.5 DU. The analyses also showed that the seasonal maximum for summer and autumn was for Rasht area and its minimum was observed for Shiraz.
Investigations of the correlation coeffiecients between total ozone of selected stations show maximum correlation coeffiecients between Tehran and Gorgan stations with a value of 0.97 and 0.98 between Tabriz and Urmia stations that are nearer to each others.
During 2007 the regional monthly mean variations of ozone over this area was between 5 to 27 percent, from which the maximum and minimum variations were respectively for cold and warm seasons. This was so for the daily variations that also increased with latitude. One of the important factors in total column ozone variations in cold season is the increase in synoptic activities which needs further investigations.
Among the selected stations of the region, the highest variations of seasonal total ozone is for Rasht station with 55% and the lowest variations is for Bandar Abbas station with 32.8%.
The most noticeable daily variations of total ozone occur in February and March especially for the stations of Tabriz, Orumieh and Rasht. While the least of variations take place for July to August especially for Shiraz and Zahedan. The range of the monthly mean variations of total ozone for all selected stations was also found to be between 1% to 8%.
For the seasonal spatial distributions of total ozone in the region we prepared contour maps for the years 2007-2008 from the total ozone of about 48 points scattered over the area. These maps show that the total ozone contour for winter and spring were almost zonal, with its value increasing with latitude. This pattern was quite different for summer and autumn, with minimum value over the mountains (especially over Zagros range that have implications for UV radiation increase over the mountains) and maximum over the low land areas of coastal regions. Also in these warm seasons there is a gradual increase of total ozone from west (from the Zagros peak range) to east that appears to be due to the reduction of topographic height in this direction.
In summer as the high pressure belt of 30° moves to the area prevailing a very calm condition the troposphere and stratosphere thicknesses are influenced (thinned slightly) by mountain ranges. This factor may be responsible for ozone reduction over the mountain ranges. In the summer time the spacial gradient of total ozone is largest in the western part of Zagros range and also in the northern part of Alborz Range and the coastal area of Caspian Sea.

88630548-021 E-mail:amoheb@ut.ac.ir

The pseudo-spectral method is used to solve the shallow-water equations in a limited-area domain. The spectral computation of spatial derivatives in the pseudo-spectral method makes it in effect equivalent to a Galerkin spectral-transform method commonly used in numerical modeling of fluid flows. Based on the potential-enstrophy conserving scheme introduced by Sadourny in 1975, the limited-area model is constructed by replacing the second-order finite-difference computation of spatial derivatives with the spectral method using Fourier basis functions. Since the limited-area domain is not periodic in the east-west and north-south directions, in order to apply the spectral method, the domain has to be made periodic using an extension zone as proposed by Haugen and Machenhauer. The background field obtained using the "Global Forecast System" (GFS) data is extended periodically and matched to the limited-area field across a relaxation zone which is introduced in order to reduce the adverse effects of the artificial extension of the field variables. In this way, the prognostic variables of the limited-area model including the velocity components and geopotential height are made periodic. To alleviate false generation of imbalance in the extension zone, two actions are taken. First, because of its large variation across the main limited-area domain, the geopotential height was decomposed to a zonal mean and a perturbation and the latter field was made periodic. Second, in the extension zone the velocity components were constructed using geostrophic approximation. Even with these two actions, the amount of imbalance penetrating the computation domain was sufficient to cause computational instability. In order to further control the generation of imbalance and reach computational stability, an explicit damping in the form of numerical diffusion was added to the equations of momentum and geopotential height with different diffusion coefficients for momentum and height. For time-stepping, a three-time-level leapfrog scheme with Robert-Asselin filter to remove the computational mode was used.
For a case, previously examined in literature, related to 1st of February 2003, results for the 48-hour prediction using the spectral algorithm in 150, 75 and 37.5 km resolutions are presented, compared and assessed using two norms, one measuring the deviation from the actual GFS fields and the other measuring the maintenance of balance during the 48-hour integrations. To determine balanced fields, the first-order implicit normal-mode initialization procedure is used. The spatial resolution refers to the grid spacing at latitude. At 150 km resolution, the predicted fields are excessively damped due to a combination of the numerical diffusion required for stability and the smoothness of the background fields used in the relaxation process. The excessive damping causes a significant departure of the fields from the results for the second-order finite-difference algorithm. At 75 and 37.5 km resolutions, however, the synoptic and even sub-synoptic scale motions are represented sufficiently well. The assessment of balance maintenance shows that a large amount of imbalance is emitted from the extension zone to the computational domain, making the limited-are spectral algorithm much less balance-preserving compared with the corresponding second-order finite-difference algorithm.
2538-371X39120130421Evaluation of aerosol optical depth using visibility and remote sensing data in urban and semi urban areas in Iranتعیین عمق نوری هواویزها با استفاده از دادههای دید افقی و سنجش از دور1631743195310.22059/jesphys.2013.31953FAمسعودخوش سیمادانشجوی دکتری هواشناسی، گروه هواشناسی، دانشگاه آزاد اسلامی، واحد علوم و تحقیقات، تهران، ایرانعباسعلیعلیاکبری بیدختیاستاد، گروه فیزیک فضا، موسسه ژئوفیزیک دانشکاه تهران، ایرانفرهنگاحمدی گیویدانشیار، گروه فیزیک فضا، موسسه ژئوفیزیک دانشکاه تهران، ایران0000-0002-9487-4862Journal Article20120507

88630548-021 khoshsima1805@gmail.com E-mail:

Remote sensing of aerosol optical depth (AOD) could be used to assess particulate matter levels at the ground; however, such measurements often need further validation. AOD is a measure of aerosol loading in the atmosphere, which means a higher AOD shows a higher aerosol loading and thus lower visibility. Aerosol concentration, determined by AOD, affects air quality in urban and semi-urban environments.
Visibility is defined as the distance at which a large dark object can just be discerned against a light sky. Visibility degradation is the most obvious manifestations of pollution, which is mainly due to absorption and scattering effects of aerosols in the atmosphere. Thus, visibility can also reflect the local air quality. In this paper an overall study for assessing aerosol optical thickness over Zanjan and Tehran area, representatives of semi urban and urban areas in Iran, are presented.
In this study, aerosol optical depth retrieved by; 1) measurements of the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites, 2) sun-photometer measurements form a Cimel sun-photometer located in Zanjan area and 3) visibility measurements taken from Geophysics Institute of Tehran University and Zanjan synoptic stations. The data were collected from Decembere 2009 to September 2010 for both stations.
Our objectives in this study are, to validate the MODIS AOD measurements, to find the possibilities of establishing near-real time AOD retrievals based on visibility data and to determine the atmospheric pollution of the study area, on a local scale.
The sun-photometer was used for the validation of both MODIS and visibility data at Zanjan area. Validation of MODIS AOD retrievals is presented for the first time in Iran. The results obtained by the direct comparison between MODIS and sun-photometer AOD data exhibited a significant correlation (r= 0.87). We have also compared the AOD retrieved by sun-photometer to visibility data in Zanjan area to verify the formula which is used to estimate AOD from visibility data. A significant correlation (r=0.62) between sun-photometer AOD and that estimated from visibility measurements was found.
A relationship between MODIS AOD and AOD estimated from visibility values was also examined for both locations. Correlation coefficient was found 0.66 for Zanjan and 0.23 for Tehtan area. It is concluded that MODIS AOD data provide more accurate information on the aerosol content in Zanjan than for Tehran area.
The major finding derived from this study suggests that MODIS AOD data provide relatively accurate information of the aerosol loading, in terms of aerosol optical depth. While in the absence of such data, visibility measurements could be used as a secondary source of aerosol load information in such a semi urban area. The advantage of using visibility data is that such data are available every hour on each day from meteorological stations and provide useful information on a near-real time basis, whenever data are available.

88009560-021 E-mail:amoheb@ut.ac.ir

Previous studies have shown that Rossby waves tend to be organized in the form of wave packets, especially in the upper troposphere. It is easier to track the wave packets than the individual troughs and ridges. The most common way to analyze wave packets is to determine their envelopes. In this study, we derive the envelope of wave packets using the three algorithms of complex demodulation, one-dimensional Hilbert transform, and the Hilbert transform with a meridional Fourier filtering. The complex demodulation and the one-dimensional Hilbert transform have previously been used in several studies. While addressing the limitation of the complex demodulation to a fixed, pre-assigned zonal wavenumber, the one-dimensional Hilbert transform may lead to erroneous results in cases when there is significant non-zonal wave propagation. A manifestation of the erroneous results is the appearance of two separate envelopes at nearby latitudes when in fact there is only one wave packet. In the literature an extension of the one-dimensional Hilbert transform has been developed to deal with such cases. The resulting algorithm, however, assumes that the waves propagate along streamlines, which is not generally the case. Since the short, meridional waves are believed to be responsible for the erroneous appearance of two nearby wave packets, it is shown that to avoid generation of such fictitious features, it suffices to augment the one-dimensional Hilbert transform by a meridional filter. The meridional filter is constructed using double Fourier transform on the sphere and its cut-off wavenumber is chosen in such a way as to achieve the desirable properties.
The data from the Global Forecast System (GFS) for the winter season covering December 2004, January and February 2005 are used. The envelope is computed for the perturbation meridional velocity at 300 hPa where perturbation is taken to be deviation from the seasonal mean. Based on their propagation characteristics, two particular wave packets are selected.
Crossing the North America on the 17th of Jan., the first wave packet propagates across the North Atlantic where its amplitude increases due to diabatic processes. Weakening over the continent, this wave packet reaches Asia and splits in two branches: whereas the northern branch is located over Russia (north of the Mediterranean and Caspian seas) with its maximum amplitude in, the southern branch crosses the North Africa and then the southern Asia with its maximum amplitude in. The southern branch remains coherent over a longer time and propagates into the North Pacific. Such splitting is consistent with the previous results published in the literature. Due to the action of baroclinic instability, the waves over the North pacific attain much higher frequency than the waves over the southern Asia. This case provides a clear example of a wave packet that can propagate across the whole Atlantic storm track, reach and then seed the Pacific storm track. First detected over the North Pacific on the 18th of Dec., the second wave packet crosses the North America and enters into the North Atlantic where its amplitude is increased substantially. This wave packet then reaches the North Africa and subsequently the southern Asia where undergoes gradual weakening and actually disappears on the 4th of Jan., making its life time 16 days. For the latter two wave packets as well as in terms of statistics for the whole winter season, the envelopes derived from each of the three wave-packet detection algorithms are compared qualitatively and quantitatively.
Comparison of the algorithms shows that because of the use of a single wave number in complex demodulation, the envelopes derived from complex demodulation are stronger than those derived from the one-dimensional Hilbert transform. This exhibits itself in positive values of the seasonal and latitudinal mean difference between the complex demodulation and the one-dimensional Hilbert transform. There are cases where using the complex demodulation and the one-dimensional Hilbert transform algorithms two separate envelopes are derived near to each other that actually belong in one wave packet when use is made of the Hilbert transform with meridional filtering. With a cut-off wavenumber of 9 for meridional filtering, some of the details are lost because of the coarse filtering. Comparison of the envelopes derived from the Hilbert transform with meridional filtering and the one-dimensional Hilbert transform shows that the seasonal and latitudinal mean differences are very small in all latitudes, if a cut-off wavenumber of 12 is used for meridional filtering leading to the best algorithm for detecting the envelopes.
As a final remark, it is worth mentioning that the general form of a two-dimensional Hilbert transform on the sphere has been introduced by Fleischmann et al. )2010(. It remains to be seen if the implementation and application of such transform can lead to an improvement over the one-dimensional Hilbert transform with meridional filtering.
2538-371X39120130421Dust emission simulation with the WRF-Chem model using new surface data in the Middle East regionشبیهسازی گسیل غبار با مدل پیشبینی عددی وضع هوا WRF-Chem و با استفاده از دادههای جدید سطح در منطقه خاورمیانه1912123195510.22059/jesphys.2013.31955FAمریمرضازادهدانشجوی دکتری هواشناسی، گروه فیزیک فضا، موسسه ژئوفیزیک دانشگاه تهران، ایرانپرویزایراننژاددانشیار، گروه فیزیک فضا، موسسه ژئوفیزیک، دانشگاه تهران، ایرانیاپینگشائواستاد، موسسه ژئوفیزیک و هواشناسی، دانشگاه کلن، آلمانJournal Article20120805

88630548-021 E-mail: mrezazadeh@ut.ac.ir

Airborne dust particles can affect the radiation balance of the surface and the atmosphere both directly through scattering and absorbing radiation and indirectly by changing the nucleation, optical properties and the life time of clouds by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. Mineral dust also significantly affects air quality and human health. The results of study on sources and the temporal characteristics of dust storms in the Middle East presented the Middle East is as one of the region most affected by dust in the world, next to Africa.
In this paper, we have studied the rates of dust emission simulated by WRF-Chem model by using new datasets of surface parameters. These data are vegetation cover, soil texture and topography, derived from MODIS sensor and USGS. We have defined the potential sources of dust by combining the derived datasets. The surface condition of the dust source regions can be determined with higher resolution, and hence the emission of dust and its distribution in the study area can be simulated more precisely. The default surface data available in WRF-Chem model are low resolution and are based on 5-year averages. Because of the crucial role surface conditions play in dust emission and loading, we compared simulations of WRF-Chem model by using the default surface data and those by using the new data. Results show the inadequacy of the default data in presenting details of soil texture and vegetation cover over the region. The new static data improve the identification of dust sources and the determination of dust emission and dust distribution.
There is no dust sources input data in WRF-Chem model. We have determined and entered the potential dust sources as input data into the WRF-Chem model and found improved estimations of dust emission rates in the region. To determine the potential dust sources in the Middle East, topography, vegetation and soil texture data were used. By using MODIS sensor dataset for leaf area index, the amount of 0.2 for leaf area index is estimated over the region. So Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut as a basement height in the study area, we estimated 1000 m above the see level as the threshold height, below which the soil erosion and dust emission from the surface may occur.
We simulated dust emission using the new static data for the 4-9 July 2009 dust event over the Middle East and identified the contributing sources of dust in this event. Now, available the dust emission scheme in the WRF-Chem model is GOCART. In the scheme dust particles with a radius of 0.1 to 6 µm are examined. In this scheme particle size distribution is done in seven categories and mass distribution of particles varies linearly depending on radius within each category. In this paper the GOCART emission scheme is used to estimation the rate of dust emission and loading. Based on the simulation results four major dust sources are found in this region. These regions are Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, and Pakistan, each playing different roles during the dust event. According to the results, the 4-9 July 2009 dust storms originated over Sudan and were transported to Iran and Turkmenistan by southwesterly flows. At the end of the period, a weak source in the southeast of Iran contributed in dust loading over the region. We found that the pattern of dust emission in the region was highly consistent with the geographical distribution of potential dust sources as defined by the new datasets of surface parameters.
Dust emission simulation results by using the new data and the default data in the model show that they have the same pattern for dust sources in the Middle East. However, the emission pattern resulted from the new data was more accurate than the one from the default data. The pattern from the new data shows that the dust emission contributing areas extend to the surrounding areas of the main sources of dust emission in the Middle East. Therefore, the dust emission pattern from the new data is more widespread than that from using the default data in the model.
The amounts of the model simulated dust emission using the new data and the default data were compared for the 4-9 July 2009. Results show that the estimated dust emission amount by using the new data is consistently greater than that by using the default data over the region. These areas include a small area in East Iran (Lut Desert), the eastern edge of the desert of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan border, the eastern border of Iraq and sporadic areas in sub-Saharan Africa. These areas are part of the marginal areas of dust sources in the Middle East that the new surface data have entered in WRF-Chem model. The extent of dust emission patterns around the main dust sources in the Middle East, which can be achieved by new data.
